What did Floyd Mayweather say about owning an NBA team?
Boxing great Floyd Mayweather spoke to reporters on Tuesday about his plans to purchase a franchise in the NBA.
A few days ago, Jake Paul claimed that boxing legend Floyd Mayweather is “broke”, and that this is why Paul’s brother, fellow YouTuber-turned-boxer Logan, still hasn’t been paid for his exhibition fight with Mayweather in June 2021.
“Floyd is broke, man,” Paul told Rob Moore of the Disruptive Entrepreneur podcast. “I’ve been saying it the whole entire time. I think he probably spent it on all the girls he pays to be around him.”
“Nothing comes right away”
However, Mayweather has denied these claims, telling the Pivot podcast that it “takes a while” for the money from fights to arrive. “Nothing comes right away. I’m still collecting checks from fights seven or eight years ago,” he said.
Mayweather on NBA ambitions: “I’m working on getting a team”
And speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mayweather further moved to scotch allegations of money trouble by revealing that he is looking at purchasing a franchise in basketball’s NBA.
“I’ve been talking to certain individuals for the last six months,” Mayweather told a press conference in Henderson, Nevada, as he announced a September boxing exhibition against MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura.
“That’s something I’ve been working on behind the scenes, but I’ve never came out and publicly talked about that with the media. Me and my team have been working behind the scenes with the NBA. I can’t say exactly where, but I’m working on getting a team.”
Competition for LeBron?
While Mayweather did not disclose details of where he intends to buy a team, it should be noted that he lives in Las Vegas - and that his comments come soon after Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James said he would like to own an NBA franchise in the Nevada city.
“I want to buy a team, for sure,” James told the TV talk show The Shop, adding: “I want a team in Vegas.”
