What happens to the players who are not selected in the WNBA Draft?
For those lucky enough to be selected, elite basketball is the prize. But what about those who don’t make the cut?
The Draft is the gateway to the pro level of basketball in the US, and the 2024 WNBA draft is set to be historic.
Teams are preparing their options for the upcoming selection process that will see the hottest prospects of college basketball chosen to make the step up to the elite level, with the Draft set to get underway at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT. on Monday 15 April.
Those lucky enough to be selected will try their talents among the greatest in the country - but what happens to the players who don’t make the cut and aren’t selected?
What happens to the players who are not selected in the WNBA Draft?
Undrafted players are rookie free agents, and therefore free to negotiate with multiple teams after the draft has concluded, but may only sign one or two-year minimum contracts.
Players are not allowed to “re-enter” the draft if they go undrafted.
What are the eligibility requirements for the WNBA Draft?
While there are a number of eligibility requirements players need to meet to enter the WNBA Draft, they only need to satisfy one to be available.
NCAA players must be graduation seniors or turn 22-years-old the year of the draft. Also, if they have any remaining eligibility, for whatever reason, they must renounce it.
As far as that goes, if their team played in the Elite 8 or any later rounds of the NCAA tournament, they had until 48 hours after their final game. Players can withdraw their name from WNBA consideration up to five days before the draft.
Regarding international players who have never played in the NCAA, they must turn 20-years-old the year of the draft.
