In the basketball world, Caitlin Clark is the name on everybody’s lips. After her history-making four-year stint in the college game, the former Iowa Hawkeyes star made the step up to the WNBA earlier this week, when she was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick by the Indiana Fever.

During her time with the Hawkeyes, the 22-year-old became the highest ever scorer in the NCAA Division I - across men’s and women’s basketball - by beating former LSU star Pete Maravich’s record haul of 3,667 points. Clark finished her college career with 3,951 points, and accrued several accolades, including two AP Player of the Year awards.

As Clark continues to strengthen her status as one of basketball’s major rising stars, she can count on the unwavering support of her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, who was by her side at the WNBA Draft on Monday.

Who is Caitlin Clark’s boyfriend, Connor McCaffery?

Like Clark, McCaffery played basketball for the Hawkeyes. According to his profile on the University of Iowa’s website, he was a finance major at the college, while also making 166 appearances for the men’s basketball team. During his time at Iowa, he earned the team’s Academic Excellence Award five times, and was also a five-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Since 2023, McCaffery has worked as a team assistant at NBA franchise the Indiana Pacers, as he bids to carve out a career as a basketball coach. He’s aiming to following in the footsteps of his father, Fran McCaffery, who is now in his 28th season as head coach of the Hawkeyes’ men’s team.

“I’ll play dummy defense, run the scout team, help coaches on film stuff, help on video projects if they need, scouting reports if they need,” McCaffery said of his role at the Pacers last May, in an interview with the Des Moines Register. “It’s kind of all-hands on deck, whatever you’re asked to do, be ready to do it.

“It’s a way in. It’s an entry-level job. You’ve got to work hard and work your way up. That’s obviously what I want to do.”

Clark and McCaffery’s relationship

The pair went public with their relationship in August 2023, when Clark posted a photo of herself alongside McCaffery on Instagram, with the caption: “Best end to summer”.

In January, McCaffery celebrated Clark’s 22nd birthday by posting a series of images on the social-media platform, alongside a heartfelt tribute to his girlfriend. “You deserve the best day,” he wrote, adding: “With all that you’ve already accomplished, there is so much more in store for you and your special self. I admire you in every way and I love you”.
