The New York Knicks have started to drop off the pace at the top of the NBA’s Eastern Conference after suffering three consecutive defeats to the Orlando Magic, the Buffalo Bulls and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Tom Thibodeau’s team will expect to get back on track when they host the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday (January 8, 7:30 p.m. ET), although they will undoubtedly feel more confident if key man Karl-Anthony Towns is available.

What injury does Karl-Anthony Towns have?

The center didn’t play in Monday’s loss to the Magic after being forced off early in the defeat to the Bulls on Friday. Worryingly, it appeared as if Towns had suffered a recurrence of a knee injury which had already troubled him in December.

The official injury report for the Raptors vs Knicks game shows the 29-year-old is again questionable due to ‘patellar tendonopothy,’ although SNY Knicks insider Ian Begley has reported Towns’ injury isn’t nearly as serious as was first feared.

“I’ve been told this is not a serious injury, nothing long-term at all,” Begley said on “The Putback,” his own web series. “He should be back soon, maybe as soon as Wednesday, so nothing to be overly concerned about.”

Whether the center does indeed feature against the Raptors remains to be seen, with a game-time decision likely to be made, unless something drastically changes during the day on Wednesday.

Towns' impressive Knicks numbers

The center has made a big impact since joining the Knicks from the Minnesota Timberwolves in October, averaging 25.1 points, 13.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 0.9 blocks per game. Those are some of the best figures he has posted in his career, with some observers even tentatively suggesting he could be an outside bet for this year’s MVP.
