Fans of the Dallas Mavericks have been shaking in their boots ahead of the upcoming game against the Denver Nuggets, sweating profusely over the fitness of star player Kyrie Irving, who popped us an an unwanted guest once again on the official injury list in the days leading up to the action.

Irving was absent for the most recent Mavericks game, also against the Nuggets, which the Denver side won 112-101. In that tie, he was hugely missed, with the output for his side clearly suffering from his absence: Dallas are 2-3 across their last five games in the NBA without Irving and 3-6 overall without him.

What injury does Kyrie Irving have?

The issue in the hive mind of the fans is a bulging disc in his back, which is as painful as it sounds. As a result of the injury, Irving had been absent for two weeks prior to the Nuggets loss.

What is Irving’s record this season?

Across 30 games played, Irving has produced a simply sensational set of numbers, averaging 24.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. He’s having a career-best from behind the 3-point line with a 44% return from distance.

“You look at the quarterback aspect. You look at the leadership. You look at his ability to score,” Kidd, the head coach, said. “Just his presence. His gravity. A lot of times he has denials on the ball, while he has it. We definitely miss that and hopefully we get that back soon.”

As for the rest of the Mavs squad, Luka Doncic is still out with that ongoing calf strain, and is set to be re-evaluated near the end of the month. Dante Exum also remains out after undergoing wrist surgery during preseason, but a return is edging closer.

The Nuggets also have their own injuries to contend with: Nikola Jokic (illness), Aaron Gordon (right calf strain), Jamal Murray (left knee inflammation), and Julian Strawther (right knee strain) are all listed as probable. Vlatko Cancar (left knee surgery rehabilitation) and DaRon Holmes II (right Achilles repair) are out of action with various issues.
