Update:

As the Los Angeles Lakers prepare to host the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night at the Crypto.com Arena, one question has dominated chatter among fans and analysts: will Luka Doncic take the court against his former team? The short answer is no, at least not tonight.

The Lakers have officially ruled Doncic out of the game against Dallas due to a left hamstring strain. The 26-year-old has been sidelined for several games already as he continues his recovery, and the team’s latest injury report confirmed he won’t play against his former franchise.

While Lakers staff and Doncic himself are optimistic about his rehabilitation, the priority right now is giving his hamstring the rest it needs rather than pushing for a return in this matchup.

This is the fourth consecutive game that Doncic has missed with the injury. He has been listed as “out” on recent injury reports while he works through a cautious rehab plan. According to sources, the Lakers hope that this approach will allow him to return stronger after the All-Star break, even though missing games now could impact his All-NBA and MVP award eligibility.

Interestingly, while he won’t play tonight, Doncic still harbours hopes of taking part in the NBA All-Star Game this weekend. The league’s midseason show will feature him representing the World Team, and despite the recent setback, he’s said to be on track to participate if he feels up to it. In a sense, it represents a relatively low-risk opportunity to get some competitive minutes before regular-season action resumes for the Lakers, although one wonders how keen California medical staff are to see him play outside of their jurisdiction.

Without Doncic in the lineup, the Lakers will lean on LeBron James, Austin Reaves and the rest of their roster to fill the void. Deandre Ayton is also listed as questionable with knee soreness.
