WNBA rivalry explained: Clark and Reese exchange words again in latest meeting
Let’s take a closer look at how Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese’s rivalry began, why it keeps escalating, and what’s behind the latest on-court exchange.
The Caitlin Clark–Angel Reese rivalry is becoming one of the most talked-about storylines in the WNBA, and it shows no signs of cooling down.
On Saturday in Atlanta, the two stars were once again at the center of a heated exchange during the Indiana Fever’s matchup with the Atlanta Dream.
The Clark-Reese rivalry continues
The moment came in the first quarter after Clark knocked down a three-pointer and later brought the ball up the floor, where Reese took a swipe at the ball following a foul by Jordin Canada. Clark reacted immediately, waving off Reese as the two exchanged words before play moved on.
It was a brief but typical scene for the two, another flashpoint in a rivalry that has followed both players from college into the professional game.
The roots of the rivalry stretch back to their NCAA days, most famously the 2023 national championship game, where Reese’s LSU team defeated Clark’s Iowa squad. Reese’s on-court taunt during that game became one of the defining viral sports moments of the year, and the emotions from that matchup has lingered ever since.
Since entering the WNBA, both players have repeatedly found themselves at the center of physical and verbal exchanges whenever their teams meet. Clark, now one of the league’s biggest draws, has faced heavy defensive attention and increased physicality in almost every matchup, while Reese has continued to lean into her aggressive, emotional style of play that helped define her college career.
So now, every Fever vs. Dream matchup, and any Reese vs. Clark crossover, becomes a drama. Saturday’s clash was no different, with Clark finishing the game with 26 points in a high-scoring performance, while Reese added 18 points and eight rebounds in a game that saw Atlanta pull away late.
Whether it’s a hard foul, a stare-down, or a quick verbal exchange like Saturday’s, the rivalry has become a focal point of the league’s growing popularity, and its most polarizing storyline. The Fever and Dream may not meet every night, but when they do, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese tend to find each other.
