Bill Belichick faces questions after poor start with North Carolina
The legendary NFL coach made a shock move to the NCAA for the 2025 football season but all is not going to plan with the Tar Heels.

The news that Bill Belichick was rocking up at the University of North Carolina made headlines around the world. But five games in, the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach is yet to show the benefits of his experience.
The Tar Heels fell to a 38-10 loss to Clemson on Saturday, with UNC trailing 28-3 after the first quarter. Belichick’s side are now 0-3 against Power 4 teams this season and there were early signs of frustration as Kenan Stadium emptied out long before the final whistle.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Belichick was asked whether major changes were needed to get the stalling season back on track. The 73-year-old struck a resolute tone.
“The main thing we need to do is to keep doing what we’re doing but do them better,” Belichick said. “Fundamentally we’re not doing the wrong things, we’re just not doing them well enough.”
“It’s a lack of concentration... and part of that is coaching, too, so I’ll take my share of the responsibility,” he continued. “We’re honest with them, honest that we’re building, and if you want to be a part of a program that’s being built, then we’re here for you.”
Things were tough from the start, with a 48-14 loss to TCU on opening night. That was the most points a Belichick team has ever given up, a humbling introduction to the unpredictability of college football.
Despite the struggles, there have been some flashes of adjustment. UNC rebounded with a 20-3 win over Charlotte, giving Belichick his first college victory. But real success in Chapel Hill will depend not just on his coaching ability, but also on on the program’s recruiting power. He is only just beginning his five-year contract with the school and has plenty of time to turn things around.
