“I’m from south Spain…”: Alvaro Folgueiras’ quote goes viral after Nebraska mistake in March Madness
The Iowa Hawkeyes are moving on to the Elite Eight after defeating Nebraska, but it was forward Alvaro Folgueiras’ postgame comment that stuck out.

March Madness always delivers unforgettable moments, and sometimes it’s not just the plays that go viral, but the quotes that follow. That was the case when Alvaro Folgueiras reacted to a bizarre sequence involving Nebraska during their Sweet 16 matchup.
Alvaro Folgueiras’ hilarious take on Nebraska blunder
During Iowa’s Sweet 16 matchup against Nebraska on Thursday, the Cornhuskers briefly found themselves with just four players on the court, a costly mistake at the worst possible time. Folgueiras quickly noticed the situation and capitalized, racing down the floor for an uncontested cherry-pick dunk that left fans stunned.

It was the kind of mental lapse that simply can’t happen in March Madness, and it immediately became one of the most talked-about sequences of the tournament. Iowa ended up walking away with the win, 77-71.
After the game, Folgueiras was asked if he realized Nebraska was short-handed in that moment.
“I’m from south Spain… we are known by being a little more life-smart than some other places.”

Folgueiras is from Málaga, a coastal city in the South of Spain, and his neighborhood is called El Palo. That’s where his basketball journey began, with CB El Palo and the youth program at Unicaja Málaga. He moved to the U.S. in high school and played ball at DME Academy in Daytona, Florida.
His March Madness post-game quote quickly took off on social media, with fans loving both the awareness and the confidence. Beyond the viral cherry-pick dunk, Alvaro Folgueiras has been a steady contributor for the Hawkeyes throughout the season and into the NCAA Tournament.
