The Sugar Bowl made world headlines on New Year’s Day, but for all the wrong reasons. An attack on innocent civilians brought New Orleans worldwide coverage as a number of people died and were injured by the driver’s actions.

The organisers of the Sugar Bowl moved swiftly to cancel the event in the aftermath of the attack, with a new date quickly being set for January 2 at 4pm ET.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families as we work through this,” said Jeff Hundley, the chief executive officer of the Allstate Sugar Bowl. “Any time we have an event like the Sugar Bowl, public safety is paramount, and all parties involved agree that could only be achieved with a postponement.”

Ahead of the game anticipation remains high, and Kirby Smart, the Georgia head coach, will be looking for a huge win, as well as a pocket-thickening bonus if he guides his side to victory.

What is Kirby Smart’s salary with Georgia?

Georgia football coach Kirby Smart is currently signed to a whopping $130 million, 10-year contract which extends through to the 2033 season.

The deal is fully guaranteed even if he is fired without cause before the end of 2028. After that, 85% of the contract remains guaranteed.

It also includes a 2-year extension. Smart is paid $13 million a year, which makes him the highest-paid public school coach in athletics.

According to reports, Smart makes money every time his team takes to the field of play. Here’s how it works:

  • Playing in a first-round game is worth $250,000
  • Reaching the quarterfinals is worth $500,000
  • Advancing to the semifinals is worth $750,000
  • Playing in the national championship game is worth $850,000
  • Winning a national championship is worth $1.25 million

Added to that, Smart will pocket a further $100,000 for reaching the SEC championship game and another $200,000 if he takes home the trophy.
