Nate Oats’ contract with Alabama: How much money does the Crimson Tide coach make?
We bring you the lowdown on the annual salary paid to Oats, who is chasing March Madness success with the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Alabama’s Nate Oats, who is bidding to lead his team to its first ever title in the men’s March Madness tournament, is among the higher-earning head coaches in college basketball, according to a USA Today ranking.
That said, the 50-year-old’s yearly wage as Crimson Tide boss is significantly lower than the salary pocketed by the top-paid coach in the NCAA’s men’s game.
How much does Oats earn as Alabama coach?
In a ranking released earlier in March, USA Today placed Oats 10th on its list of the best-paid coaches in men’s college hoops, with a reported annual salary of $5 million.
Oats’ Alabama pay packet is nearly $4 million below the annual sum banked by the highest-earning coach: the Kansas Jayhawks’ Bill Self, who nets $8.8 million a year, per USA Today.
The Crimson Tide’s March Madness path so far
Now in his sixth season as Alabama head coach, Oats remains on course to steer the Crimson Tide to a second consecutive appearance in the Final Four of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament.
Having beaten the Robert Morris Colonials 90-81 in the opening phase of March Madness, the No. 2-seeded Crimson Tide then booked its place in the Sweet 16 round by defeating the Saint Mary’s Gaels 80-66 on Sunday.

Under Oats, Alabama reached the Final Four for the first time in program history in 2024, before losing in the semi-finals to eventual champions the UConn Huskies.
Per USA Today’s Steven Berkowitz, Alabama’s progress to the last 16 has earned him an extra $100,000 in bonuses so far. Total bonuses of $700,000 are available to the coach in 2025, the media outlet adds.
Who do Alabama face next in March Madness?
In the Sweet 16, the Crimson Tide will face the sixth-seeded BYU Cougars, with San Francisco’s 18,000-capacity Chase Center the venue for the matchup.
Alabama vs BYU is to be played on Thursday, March 27, with tip-off schedule for 7:09 p.m. ET/4:09 p.m. PT.
