2023 COLLEGE WORLD SERIES

Oklahoma Sooners three-peat as national champions in Women’s College World Series

The lady Sooners didn’t even break a sweat. Dominating Florida State in much the same way that they dismantled Texas only a year ago, this OU women may well be the greatest college softball team ever assembled.

It all got underway with a Seminole home run in the fourth when Mack Leonard pulled one over the right field wall. Oklahoma answered right back with a Cydney Sanders blast to almost the same location. But the Sooners were no longer asleep as Grace Lyons blew one over the glove of the outstanding Kayley Mudge in left field for another home run.

And then Oklahoma tacked on another run that before Jordy Bahl, who had a stellar outing in Game 1, came on to pitch and slammed the door shut on Florida State.

With the 3-1 win, Oklahoma won their seventh national title, and their third in a row, capping off the winningest season in NCAA history, going 61-1 and ending the season with a 53 game winning streak.

Like Texas were before them, Florida State are a fabulous team. Far better than their outing in Omaha would suggest. They say that the mark of greatness is to be able to make great teams look average, and Oklahoma certainly has that ability.

Only one other team has ever three-peated in the WCWS when UCLA did it from 1988-1990. When Oklahoma lost some of their seniors last year, particularly the stellar Jocelyn Alo, there were thoughts that maybe their best days were behind them. But in true lady Sooner fashion, they responded by upping the ante.

They put together a season this year that will likely never be matched. And while they showed vulnerability at times, the resilience that they demonstrated time and again sets them apart as true champions.

For now, to everyone in the stands and all other teams in the country, tip your hats. There is greatness in our midst.
