Ryan Day is currently the head football coach at Ohio State University, a position he has held since January 2019. Before being appointed as head coach, Day was the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Buckeyes. Including the three games he coached in 2018 in an interim role, his record is 66-10 as of 2024.

Day’s career in football began as a college quarterback at the University of New Hampshire, where he played from 1998 to 2001. Following his playing career, he started coaching at the University of New Hampshire as a tight ends coach. He has also worked as an assistant coach at Boston College, Temple, and the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League.

Day’s stint as the acting head coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes for the first three games of the 2018 season was a remarkable success. He led the team to three wins and helped them maintain their position as one of the top teams in the country.

Despite being in an interim role, Day’s coaching style and leadership skills were evident and praised by many.

Ryan Day’s contract details

Day secured a lucrative seven-year contract extension in May 2022, worth $66.5 million. His base salary is $2 million annually, but additional income from media appearances, sponsorships, and retention bonuses raises his 2024 earnings to over $10.2 million. This figure includes contributions from deals with Coca-Cola, Kroger, and Ohio State’s apparel contracts.

Day’s contract includes a hefty buyout clause of $37 million, decreasing to $25 million after the 2025 season. If terminated, his buyout could be reduced by offsetting any new coaching salary he earns.

Performance incentives allow Day to earn up to $1 million for a national championship victory, with additional bonuses for playoff progress and Big Ten achievements. Academic incentives and coach-of-the-year accolades also offer extra rewards.
