A year after making history with LSU Tigers women’s basketball team, Kim Mulkey is dreaming of yet more March Madness glory at this year’s NCAA tournament.

How many NCAA women’s tournaments has Kim Mulkey won?

The first person in NCAA women’s basketball history to win a national championship as a player (one), assistant coach (one) and head coach (four), the 61-year-old followed up three tournament wins in charge of the Baylor Bears (2005, 2012, 2019) by taking LSU to their first ever March Madness victory in 2023, comfortably defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes in last year’s championship game in Dallas.

On Monday, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will come face to face once again, albeit this time in an Elite Eight rematch at MVP Arena in Albany, New York (tip-off at 7:15 p.m. ET).

Given Mulkey’s lengthy record of success on the touchline, it perhaps won’t come as a huge surprise to learn she is currently the best paid coach in women’s college basketball.

Mulkey becomes best-paid NCAA women’s coach after March Madness win

Following last year’s championship victory, the veteran coach agreed a new 10-year contract with LSU, which will see her earn $3.65 million in the final season of the deal in 2032/33. According to USA Today’s Basketball Coaching Salary database, Mulkey will make $3.264 million this year, which will gradually increase season after season.

She was previously under contract until the end of the 2028/29 with a salary of $2.5 million per season. Her pay increase has seen her jump ahead of UConn’s Geno Auriemma and Dawn Staley of South Carolina, who will both earn $3.1 million this season.

The three best-paid women’s coaches could all yet be victorious in this year’s March Madness, with the South Carolina Gamecocks having already booked their place in the Final Four with a Regional Final win over the Oregon State Beavers.

Like LSU, UConn are one win away from the Final Four. They are also in action later on Monday, when they take on the USC Trojans at Moda Center in Portland, Oregon (tip-off at 9:15 p.m. ET).
