Getting his start as a coach with straight after his playing days at the University of Cincinnati, Meyer spent one season as the defensive back coordinator for Saint Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. While there, Meyer was taken on to the Ohio State staff as an assistant tight end coach, before he moved on to assistant positions at Illinois State, Colorado State and Notre Dame.
After seventeen years of assistant positions, Meyer was given his first head coaching job by Bowling Green where he turned around a failing program and went 8-3 in his first year. This caught the attention of the Utah Utes, who brought Meyer in as their head coach a year later.
