Update:

March Madness is getting closer, and several teams have already secured their place in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.

While most of the field will not be finalized until Selection Sunday, conference tournaments across the country are already sending champions to the Big Dance.

Here’s how the selection process works, and which teams have already punched their ticket.

How teams qualify for March Madness

The NCAA Tournament field includes 68 teams.

  • 31 automatic bids are given to the winners of each Division I conference tournament.
  • The remaining 37 spots are at-large selections, chosen by the NCAA Tournament selection committee based on resumes that include wins, strength of schedule, NET ranking and other metrics.

Those at-large teams will be revealed later today, Selection Sunday, (March 15), when the full bracket is announced.

Before the tournament officially begins, four play-in games known as the First Four will take place in Dayton, Ohio, on March 17–18.

But several programs already know they’ll be dancing.

Teams already in the 2026 NCAA Tournament

As of Sunday morning, March 15, the following schools have secured automatic bids by winning their conference tournaments:

  • Queens (N.C.) - ASUN
  • Idaho - Big Sky
  • High Point - Big South
  • Hofstra - Colonial Athletic Association
  • Wright State - Horizon League
  • Siena - Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
  • Northern Iowa - Missouri Valley Conference
  • Long Island (LIU) - Northeast Conference
  • Tennessee State - Ohio Valley Conference
  • Lehigh - Patriot League
  • Furman - Southern Conference
  • McNeese - Southland Conference
  • North Dakota State - Summit League
  • Troy - Sun Belt Conference

(Total automatic bids clinched so far: 26)

Conference tournaments still to be decided

Several major conferences are finishing their tournaments on Selection Sunday, meaning additional automatic bids will be decided shortly before the bracket reveal.

Championship games still scheduled for Sunday include:

  • Big Ten (Michigan vs Purdue)
  • SEC (Arkansas vs Vanderbilt)
  • American Athletic Conference (South Florida vs Wichita State)
  • Atlantic 10 (Dayton vs VCU)
  • Ivy League (Yale vs Cornell)

Once those games conclude, the full list of 31 automatic qualifiers will be complete.

Why automatic bids matter

Conference tournaments often create some of the most dramatic moments of March Madness. A team that wins their conference tournament guarantees a spot in the NCAA field, even if they had little chance of receiving an at-large bid.

That is what produces the so-called “bid stealers” every year - lower-seeded teams that win their conference tournament and take a spot that might otherwise have gone to a bubble team from a power conference.

With dozens of conference tournaments still underway, many more teams will join the field before Selection Sunday. For now, though, these programs can celebrate early. They already know they’ll be part of March Madness.
