It was a night of broken records for the San Francisco 49ers, and not in the positive sense.

The side suffered their heaviest loss to the Green Bay Packers in franchise history in a 38-10 match that was also the third-worst defeat since Kyle Shanahan took over as head coach in 2017.

When quizzed on the nature of the damning result at full-time, instead of isolating a single issue, the coach spent almost an entire minute angrily highlighting the numerous ways the 49ers failed to ignite on the field.

'That’s how you get embarrassed'

“The whole game was [disappointing],” Shanahan remarked. “When you have those penalties, we didn’t stop the run like we did, and we had those three turnovers in the second half. That’s how you get embarrassed.”

Shanahan also took the time to highlight several issues, including a struggling defence that was dominated in the first half, allowing 125 yards and a touchdown on 23 Green Bay carries, numerous missed tackles, costly penalties (tying a season-high with nine for 77 yards), and three turnovers that Green Bay converted into touchdowns.

49ers linebacker Fred Warner concurred with his boss, calling the defeat “probably one of the worst ones I’ve been a part of. It is embarrassing. You’ve got to take it on the chin, take it like a man, and move on.”

Up next for the 49ers is a hugely challenging tie against the Buffalo Bills, who recently defeated the previously unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs, meaning that this may well be the toughest fixture they could have wished for.

“We all share a bad feeling right now,” San Francisco guard Dominick Puni admitted in the aftermath. “We’ve got to get back to next week. A big game against the Bills on Sunday night. We’ve got to go.”
