49ers fan’s viral reaction to Jake Moody’s missed field goal

NFL fans are not known for being very forgiving - even in the preseason. When 49ers kicker Jake Moody missed a FG, he experienced that firsthand.

Update:

Last week, the San Francisco 49ers officially named Jake Moody their kicker after releasing Greg Joseph, but the “competition” was never real.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said in April the plan was to push Moody, who struggled in the 2023 playoffs and had a disastrous 2024, by bringing in capable competition. Instead, the team signed Joseph, a journeyman on a non-guaranteed deal, signaling from the start that Moody’s job was safe.

Despite Joseph actually performing slightly better in camp (22-of-24 field goals to Moody’s 21-of-24), he was cut after just nine days, with Shanahan citing “roster numbers.” Coaches and teammates repeatedly praised Moody while barely mentioning Joseph, reinforcing that the outcome was predetermined.

The problem: a manufactured competition may have protected the team’s draft investment, but it didn’t truly build Moody’s confidence. Without a real challenge, his mental toughness under pressure remains unproven, and fans already frustrated with his past misses are losing patience seeing him struggle again

Fan’s viral reaction to Moody FG fail

In the 49ers’ second preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, the two teams were tied 10-10 towards the end of the first half. Moody could’ve given the Niners the lead, but failed to make a 53-yard field goal.

Clearly, the fans have lost their patience as this one went viral for flipping off Moody after the missed kick.

Towards the end of the third quarter, Moody had a chance to make up for it - he made a 30-yard field goal to tie up the game again, 13-13. But it didn’t exactly build fans’ confidence as it went pretty far left and was a near-miss.

In their first preseason game, Moody didn’t make any field goal attempts, so this game was his first chance to show he’d improved, but at the start, he hadn’t convinced anyone.

Fans on social media were immediately calling on head coach Kyle Shanahan to cut Moody from the team after the first miss.

Moody makes up for it

In the end, Moody was actually the hero. The game came down to a tie with four seconds left and Moody made a 59-yard field goal to win it for the Niners. It was a career-long for the kicker and may have just been the proof fans needed to feel better about Shanahan’s decision again.
