49ers 26 vs 23 Rams summary , stats, scores and highlights | NFL Week 5

The Rams were rolling down the field, and it looked like the Niners were worn out in the OT session after Stafford connected on a couple of deep passes to Adams and Atwell, but once they were in the red zone the Niners defense tightened up and on 4th and 1 Kyren Williams was stopped on 4th and 1 and the injury plagued Niners held on to win on the road in a short week. 

Pineiro had already kicked a game winner earlier this year. This may not have been a walk off but it put the game in the hands of the defense, and they delivered. 

Having already missed a long field goal try and a PAT, Karty came back out with the game on the line. He hit the clutch 48 yarder to send the game to OT, but then landed the kick off in OT short of the landing zone. That gave SF the ball at the 40 to start OT, and that would be huge for the visitors. 

Three minutes is more than enough time to give Matt Stafford to orchestrate a game winning drive. In fact it was enough time for two drives. The Rams were on the doorstep of the end zone but Williams fumbled what would have been his 3rd TD of the night right at the one yard line with just over a minute to go. 

The LA defense would hold the Niners to a 3 and out and take all of their timeouts which gave them the ball back at the 50 with 43 seconds left. 

The Niners settled down and were able to get past the 50 yard line, but not much more and they were forced to settle for a go ahead field goal. Eddy Pineiro drilled 59 yard to take the lead with just under 3:00 to go in the game. 

The Rams tied it up and had a chance to take the lead early in the final quarter with this Kyren Williams TD, his second of the night. Karty would miss the PAT and that kept the game tied, giving a little momentum to SF, or at least taking the wind out of the LA sails. 

Stafford ended the night with 389 yards and 3 TDs, but it wouldn't be enough. 

The Rams came out and had another drive into SF territory but Joshua Karty missed a field goal which led to a Niners FG to put the lead up to 13. LA came clawing back and got into the end zone to make it a one possession game and it just felt like the wheels were coming off for San Fran. 

Right before the half, the Rams finally got on the board with this Kyren Williams TD pass. Stafford went 6/8 on a drive that LA went exclusively through the air. That's when Matt Stafford and the offense started to click. 

The Rams were finally building up a drive after running just 6 plays in the first quarter, but the Stafford pitch was fumbled by Blake Corum and the Niners came up with the big TO. That wouldn't be the only self inflicted mistake made by the Rams. 

The first quarter and some change were all about Mac Jones and Christian McCaffrey. He had 90 total yards before halftime and this TD catch. He ended the night with 57 yards rushing and 82 yards receiving. 

The Niners drove right down the field on the opening series and punched it into the end zone with this short pass to Jake Tonges. Jones looked like a seasoned vet in his third start of the season, and had a couple of great drives to start the game. 

Week 5 kicked off with an NFC West showdown between two 3-1 teams, and it needed more than four quarters to be decided. Mac Jones came in and gave a gutsy performance backing up the injured Brock Purdy. 

Purdy isn't the only one that is injured for the Niners, but San Fran got news earlier in the week that their QB1 wasn't available and Mac Jones came in and played super sub.

Jones was under pressure and tried to let it go to Tonges but that came up short and it's 4th down.

Jones is swarmed by Young and sacked for a loss of 9!

Quick throw from Jones to McCaffrey and he reels it in for a 7 yard pick up.

Quick pass to Tonges on the left side and he makes another 6 yard catch for a first down.

Jones on the left side for Tonges who reels it in for 6 yards.

Jones swings it out to McCaffrey on the right side and eh makes a move around a defender and takes it for a gain of 15.

SF get the ball from their 40 after Kraty kicked it short of the landing zone. 

Jones finds Juszczyk on the left side and he fights for the first down and a 12 yard gain.

And this was Kraty's FG to tie the game with 2 on the clock. 

This is the fumble from Williams at the goal line but the D held SF to a three and out. 

The Rams win the toss and they differ. SF will get the ball to start the OT session.

The Rams D stepped up and slowed the Niners down after the turnover and that allowed Stafford to start to air it out on the next drive. He went 6/8 on this drive, and he cut the lead in half with his TD pass to Wlliams. Stafford is 9/13 for 109 and a TD. 

The Rams were driving but a blunder coughed the ball up as Stafford's pitch to Corum hit the deck and it was Gipson there to recover it. 

Mac move the Niners into scoring position again, and on the one yard line, he hit McCaffrey on an out route for the TD to put SF up 14-0. Mac is 15/23 for 179 yards and 2 TDs, while McCaffrey has 45 yards rushing and 44 yards receiving. 

The defense came to play tonight too. With all the injuries on the other side of the ball, they had to make life easy for Mac and the offense. They shut the Rams down in the 1st quarter as SF ran over 20 plays and LA ran 6. 

Mac Jones has been sensational in his third start for the NIners. He drove San Fran right down the field on their first drive and connected with Tonges for the 1st TD of the night. 

It was all about Mac Jones and Christian McCaffrey in that first half. They fed their star RB out of the gate and they didn't stop feeding him.

Return of the Mac

Mac Jones came in and played some pretty damn good football for the coach that apparently wanted to draft him when he came out of the University of Alabama in 2021. He went to the Patriots instead, and led them to the playoffs before the entire franchise took a turn for the worst. He spent last year with the Jags and kind of got his swag back after Trevor Lawrence went down with a season ending injury. Now he’s in the Bay Area backing up Purdy, and it looks like he’s going to be awfully busy this year. He’s already played two games, and led the Niners to wins over the Cardinals and Saints. Not the greatest competition, but he thew for 279 yards and 3 TDs vs. the Saints and 284 yards and 1 TD with 1 INT against the Cards. 

Puka’s sensational start

Los Angeles has a new star and his name is Puka Nacua. The former BYU Cougar has come to the City of Angeles and made himself right at home heading into his third year with the Rams. Cooper Kupp is gone and there is a new sheriff in town. He’s coming off a career high game in which he caught 13 balls for 170 yards. Nacua is leading the the NFL is receiving yards by a long shot. In four games, he’s got 503 yards. The next closest receiver has 100 yards less than him. 

Star watch: Rams 

Matt Stafford missed the entire preseason with a back injury, but at 37 years old he didn’t really need to be too involved in the preseason. Naturally it took a little while for him to get loose, and with out his favorite target Cooper Kupp lined up out wide, he’s had to get used to his new WRs. His back looks like it’s holding up just fine and his chemistry with his WRs looks like it’s in midseason form. He’s got the second most passing yards in the league with 1,114, just five behind the leader Dak Prescott but his Rams are 3-1 and Dallas is 1-2-1. It’s early, but Matthew Stafford deserves to be in the MVP conversation. 

Star watch: Niners 

With all of the injuries that have mounted up over the last few weeks for the Niners, the focus has never been more centered around Christian McCaffrey. Why not? It was only a couple years ago when he won Offensive Player of the Year, but a month into the season he has not been allowed to do what he does best which is run the ball. He’s averaging just 56.2 yards a game on the ground and has yet to score a TD. He’s been much more effective catching the ball, with 31 receptions and 76.2 yards with one TD scored. It’s good that he’s helping in the passing game, but the fact that he’s the second leading receiver on the team tells you how much the passing game is struggling and the affect that has had on him being able to run the ball. 

Last game: Rams 

After falling apart in their game against Philly in Week 4, the Rams returned home to take on another undefeated team in the Indianapolis Colts. It was a slow start to the game for both teams who kicked a field goal each but thing started to heat up in the 2nd quarter when the Colts scored a TD and then Matt Stafford found Devante Adams with a 10 yard TD pass right before the half to put LA up 13-10. Indy would respond in the second half, with a TD and a field goal to take a seven point lead, but the Rams came roaring back. Two Matt Stafford TDs in the last 3:20 capped a fantastic comeback thanks to an 88 yard connection to Tutu Atwell with 1:33 to go. That improved the Rams to 3-1 while the Colts dropped their first game of the season.

Purdy out

The Niners need no reminder of they injury troubles. It’s a bug they haven’t been able to shake since the beginning of last season when Christian McCaffrey had an injured achilles. He missed substantial time, along with a handful of other players, and now Brock Purdy seems to be under an injury spell that could keep him out for an extended amount of time. He already missed two games before coming back last week against the Seahawks, but his turf toe flared up again and now he is set to miss tonight’s game on a short week. It’s not determined how much time Purdy will have to miss, but that will throw Mac Jones under center again. 

Is it the best division in football?

Is the NFC West the best division in football? We have seen the Rams win the Super Bowl within the last half decade and the Niners have been there a few times. This year, there are three 3-1 teams in the division which makes the currently the best division in football. Thing are certain to even out over the course of the season, but the question is will the NFC’s Super Bowl representative come from the division? 

Last game: Niners 

The Niners offense hasn’t started to click yet, and that’s understandable given the injury situation they have at WR, and TE and at QB. Last week Brock Purdy came back from a toe injury that kept him out for two games, and he threw for 300+ yards, but he also threw a couple INTs and lost a fumble. San Fran went down 14-3 early and spent he whole game climbing back into the game. Christian McCaffrey had a TD catch early in the third quarter to bring the Niners back into the ball game, but a Jacksonville punt return for a TD put the Jags up 26-14 heading into the fourth quarter. Another Purdy TD pass cut the lead to one score and a missed FG from JAX opened the door for San Fran to take the lead but Purdy was strip sacked with under 3:00 to go and the Jags held on to win.

Hello everyone and welcome to Sofi Stadium where two of the favorites to win the NFC West are set to go head to head in a primetime match up in what could be the best division in football. It’s early but there are three teams that are all 3-1 and tonight’s game from LA could have heavy implications down the road when it comes to the playoff race. San Fran are coming off their first loss of the season last week, and with a long list of injuries are not just trying to keep their heads about water, they are trying to take the top spot in the division tonight. The Rams were a second half collapse against the Eagles away from coming into tonight undefeated. They lost that game to Philly a couple weeks ago but responded with late win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
