Update:

The Pittsburgh Steelers have undergone a roster revamp over the offseason, and the headline signing, Aaron Rodgers seems ready to do anything to help the team. Even if that anything means doing something he hasn’t done a whole lot over the course of his career.

“Whatever Mike wants” says Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers has been around the block more than a few times. The four time MVP, and former Super Bowl champ has seen it all and done it all. What he hasn’t been doing much over the course of his career is playing in preseason. Ever since taking the starting role in Green Bay following the Brett Favre era, Rodgers has rarely been under center for preseason games.

Now it seems like Rodgers, who is 41 years old and entering his 21st season in the NFL, is willing to put on the pads and take some snaps this preseason. It’s unlikely, but rookie QB Will Howard’s hand injury could force Rodgers into making his Steelers debut as early as this weekend. Rodgers said he doesn’t expect to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night, but he is willing to do whatever his coach tells him.

“It’s an interesting conversation,” Rodgers said Wednesday. “I think Mike (Tomlin) and I have that at some point. I don’t think it’s in the plan for me to play this week, but whatever Mike wants to do, I’m fully on board,” said Rodgers after the Steelers practice on Wednesday.

Rogers preseason numbers

Steelers fans are itching to see what this new look offense can do, but they won’t want to see Rodgers too much in preseason as the 41 year old tries to stay healthy for the duration of the regular season and into the playoffs. The last time we saw Rodgers under center in a preseason game was his first year in New York back in 2023.

Two years ago, he played the final game of the Jets exhibition slate against the New York Giants and went 5/8 for 47 yards and threw one TD in the first two drives of the game. That would be the most we saw of Rodgers in that disastrous season that ended with a season ending achilles tear he suffered in Week 1.

Before that, Rodgers suited up for a preseason game back 2018. That was the year in which he was returning from a broken collar bone that forced him to miss the final 10 games of the season. He made his comeback in the Packers’ second preseason game, going 2/4 for 35 yards and a TD.
