AFC East: Changing of the guard

For the first time in decades, the AFC East has an open race for the divisional crown, with Miami eager to claim the top spot.

The AFC East has been dominated by the Buffalo Bills since Tom Brady left the New England Patriots. Now, the Miami Dolphins and the New York Just are looking to complete the changing of the guard and crown themselves as the new division champions after a couple of key players left Sean McDermott’s side this offseason.

Without Stefon Diggs and with Keon Coleman, the Buffalo Bills offense is gong to have a different look to it. The Jets will be hoping Aaron Rodgers achilles has healed enough to guide them to a Super Bowl run. The Dolphins have provided Tua Tagovailoa with more weapons and have an even more terrifying offense than last year. Meanwhile the Pats start a new era with Jerod Mayo replacing Bill Belichick on the sidelines.

Miami was neck and neck with Buffalo last year in the division, and head coach Mike McDaniel wants the AFC East title after 15 years. The Dolphins will count on their explosive offense led by Tua, and are hoping to rebuild the offense with their draft picks after DT Christian Wilkins and LB Andrew Van Ginkel left in free agency.

ATTACK. Hill is Tua´s favorite target and with the addition of Odell Beckham Jr. he will have even more room to run his deep routes from the slot. Last year, the former Kansas City Chief led the NFL with 1,799 yards, (112.4 mpg) and 13 TD receptions. This year he will be chasing the 2,000 yard mark he fell just short of last season.

DEFENSE. With the offenses dominating in the NFL these days, it never hurts to have one of the best cornerbacks in the league on your side. Jalen Ramsey is going bear a lot of the responsibility for the Dolphins in the 2024 season. The ex LA Ram, and Jacksonville Jaguar will be tasked with keeping the best wide receivers quite all year long.

New year, new team. The wide receiving corps is going to be awfully different this season. With no Stefon Diggs or Gabe Davis, Sean McDermott is going to have to cook up a new scheme with Keon Coleman and vet Curtis Samuel as Josh Allen’s top weapons. The offense will try to shake off the multiple injuries they suffered last year, and return to being a Top-10 unit.

ATTACK. If the Bills are going to win the division for another year running, it’s going to be on the shoulders of Josh Allen. The gun slinger has a completely new set of wide receivers and needs to develop a connection with them ASAP. If he can find some synergy with Coleman, former FSU Seminole could be in the running for Rookie of the Year.

DEFENSE. The linebacker was named a starter in 2023 and delivered for his team. He was the team leader in tackles with 143 and finished the season with 6.5 sacks from the middle of Buffalo´s 4-3 defense. Bernard’s importance to the defense was most noticeable in the divisional round of the playoffs when he was sidelined against the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Bills defense got torched.

A nightmare. That’s what the Jets went through last season. Aaron Rogers suffered a torn Achilles on the forth play of the season opener and it was down hill from there. For that reason, Robert Saleh made sure to beef up his offensive line in the Draft and in free agency. Guard Josh Simpson and tackles Ole Fasanu and Tyron Smith were brought in to protect the four-time NFL MVP.

ATTACK. After a year of rehab, Rodgers should be ready for for the start of the season as he tries to lead the Jets to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. With one of the best offensive lines, and WR´s like Mike Williams and Malachi Corley with RB Tarik Cohen in the backfield he won’t be short of options in the passing game.

DEFENSE. The defense was the only reason the Jets had any hopes of making the playoffs despite the quarterback problems. The anchor of the D-Line is Quinnen Williams, who draws double-team after double-team but still finished the season with 11.5 tackles in the backfield and 5.5 sacks.

From 2001 to 2018, the Patriots went to nine Super Bowls, won six Lombardi Trophies with Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. A new era is beginning in Foxborough with Jerod Mayo taking over on the sidelines. The future QB of the franchise is thought to be Drake May, who takes the place of Mac Jones, but will probably have to wait for his chance behind Jacoby Brissett.

ATTACK. He’ll be either Jacoby Brissett or Drake May´s best friend. Any QB needs a running back willing to move the football down field, and Stevenson does that. His ankle injury kept him out of the final weeks of last season, but this year he returns looking for the second 1,000 yard season of his career.

DEFENSE. Judon’s season ended early last year after he suffered a bicep injury that took longer than expected to heal. The pass rusher is now in the last year of his contract in New England, and he will look to impress knowing big money could be coming his way at the end of the season. The four time Pro Bowler has 32 sacks in his three season from Foxborough, and will add to that this season.
