A.J. Brown reveals childhood Patriots obsession that came full circle after blockbuster trade
A.J. Brown opens up about his childhood Patriots obsession, emotional Super Bowl memories, and how his NFL journey brought him full circle.
A.J. Brown’s blockbuster move to the New England Patriots is already grabbing headlines, but what he revealed about his past just makes it even more interesting.
Beyond the football implications, Brown shared a striking detail in a recent in-depth interview with Maria Taylor. Long before he was an NFL star, he was a devoted Patriots fan whose connection to the franchise was shaped in childhood.
A Patriots fan long before the NFL
Brown explained that his love for New England began through family influence, particularly his older cousin, who was a passionate Patriots supporter. That early exposure quickly turned into full-blown fandom.
He recalled growing up watching the Patriots during their championship runs, even organizing Super Bowl watch parties as a kid and fully investing emotionally in every moment, including the highs and the heartbreak.
One moment stood out in particular - the infamous “helmet catch” game, when the Patriots fell to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. Brown admitted he was so upset watching the loss that it became a defining childhood memory.
In one of the most revealing parts of the interview, Brown described how intense his fandom could be as a child. When the Patriots lost that Super Bowl, he said he was so frustrated that he told people at his house to leave.
It was a moment that, while humorous in hindsight, highlights just how deep his connection to the franchise ran long before he ever stepped onto an NFL field. That emotional investment stuck with him through adulthood, even as his professional career took him to other teams.
From childhood dream to NFL reality
Brown also reflected on how surreal it feels to now join the franchise he once followed so closely. He described the move as a “dream come true”, recalling how he used to imagine himself in Patriots gear as a kid, watching Tom Brady-led teams dominate the league.
What was once childhood imagination is now reality, walking into Gillette Stadium not as a fan, but as a featured weapon in the offense. For a player who grew up celebrating Patriots championships, the next chapter will be written from inside the locker room rather than the living room.
