Are Jeff Bezos & Jay-Z about to buy the Washington Commanders?
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has shown interest in acquiring the Washington Commanders now that Dan Snyder has planned to sell the NFL franchise.
After 23 years as owners, Dan and Tanya Snyder have considered selling the Washington Commanders amid an investigation by US authorities for tax fraud.
Jeff Bezos looks to buy Washington Commanders
As the second richest man on the planet, it’s clear that the price of the Washington based franchise is not the major issue, but rather the viability of the deal itself. As mentioned above, the current owners are currently facing legal issues, which is to say, could that have an effect on the report from People magazine, which indicates that Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon has shown interest in acquiring the Commanders? Worth a repored $125 billion, Bezos might very well see the estimated franchise price of $6 billion as a steal.
Interestingly, the same reportalso suggests that Bezos would not be alone in the venture - though he certainly needs no help. Believe it or not, rap icon and multi- Grammy winner Jay-Z is said to be associated with the possible acquisition as well. This of course wouldn’t be the artist’s first foray into sports, as he’s already a minority owner of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. Needless to say, should the move come to fruition it would go a long way to further cementing the relationship between the NFL and Amazon. Consider for a moment, Amazon’s lucrative move that saw their streaming network acquire broadcast rights for ‘Thursday Night Football’ in the United States. As for Commanders themselves, Washington’s team currently sits on a record of 4-4. They’ve not been terrible, but they haven’t been great and that’s in part due to the delayed recovery of Chase Young. Ultimately, one has to imagine that should Bezos and Co. acquire the franchise, things will likely change.
Jeff Bezos hasn’t hidden his interest in an NFL franchise
In truth, Bezos has been here before. It was back in 2019, when CBS Sports reported that Bezos was interested in owning an NFL team. There was, however, no team on the market at the time, as the Carolina Panthers had just been bought by David Tepper for the price of $2.275 million. From then to now, the only other team to change hands was the Denver Broncos who were acquired by Rob Walton of the Walmart group for $4.65 billion back in August 2022.
