Are the Seattle Seahawks up for sale?
Reports claim that the Seattle Seahawks will be put up for sale immediately after Super Bowl LX.
As the Seattle Seahawks players prepare for the biggest game of their lives, the team’s future ownership has been thrown into doubt.
With just over a week to go until the Seahawks face the New England Patriots at Super Bowl LX reports suggest that the team will soon be put up for sale. ESPN claims that the team will officially be placed on the market after next weekend’s NFL championship game.
The report adds that sales negotiations - spanning both ownership and league levels - have been going on for at least the past week. The Seahawks organization has responded by dismissing the reports, but confirming that the long-term plan is to sell the team.
Who owns the Seattle Seahawks?
Both the Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trail Blazers of the NBA were owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who passed away in 2018 from complications related to Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
Control of both franchises subsequently passed to his sister, Jody Allen, as the executor of the trust. She was tasked with fulfilling Paul’s wishes: to sell the teams and donate the proceeds to charity. The team remains tight-lipped on that process.
“We don’t comment on rumors or speculation, and the team is not for sale,” a statement, released on Friday, from the Paul G. Allen Estate reads. “We’ve already said that will change at some point per Paul’s wishes, but there is no news to share. Our focus right now is winning the Super Bowl and completing the sale of the Portland Trail Blazers in the coming months.”
