Why does Brandon Aiyuk want to leave the 49ers? Explaining the agent drama and latest claims
Aiyuk’s latest video adds agent drama and shocking claims as his standoff with the 49ers escalates ahead of training camp.

The situation between wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers started as a typical contract dispute, but it’s recently turned personal, and things are getting messy.
In his latest YouTube video, Aiyuk doubled down on his desire to leave the 49ers, but he also took it a step further, blaming his former agent and alleging behind-the-scenes tension that has completely fractured his relationship with the organization.
Why does Brandon Aiyuk want to leave the 49ers?
Aiyuk’s frustration is the result of a year-long breakdown in trust. The wide receiver has been at odds with the team since 2025, when the 49ers voided the remaining guaranteed money in his contract after he failed to participate in rehab for a serious knee injury. That decision marked a turning point, escalating what had been a standard contract situation into a full-blown dispute.
Since then, Aiyuk has distanced himself from the team entirely, even landing on the reserve/left squad list after stepping away from team activities. Now, his latest comments suggest the relationship is beyond repair.
“We is not cool. We won’t be cool,” Aiyuk said in the video, adding that he has no intention of returning to the team facility.

Aiyuk’s agent drama
The most notable revelation from Aiyuk’s latest comments centers on his former agent. Aiyuk claims the agent, whom he says he fired, played a key role in creating tension between himself and the organization. According to Aiyuk, the situation is complicated by the agent’s relationship with the team’s front office, which he believes created a conflict of interest.
He also accused the agent of contacting his wife after being fired, something Aiyuk clearly took personally. While those claims have not been independently verified, they still make an already tense situation feel even more hostile.
Brandon Aiyuk revealed that he fired his agent, Ryan Williams of Athletes First, in Nov. after the 49ers voided his 2026 guaranteed money including his $24.935M bonus.

Aiyuk makes startling claim about 49ers GM
In the same video, Aiyuk alleged that 49ers general manager John Lynch showed up uninvited at his home in an attempt to smooth things over. Aiyuk described the visit as uncomfortable and said he warned his wife to stay away while Lynch was there. He also claimed Lynch was trying to apologize on behalf of head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Again, no evidence has surfaced to support that claim, but the tone of Aiyuk’s comments makes it clear that any trust between player and organization appears to be gone.
Could Aiyuk actually join the Commanders?
Aiyuk has made no secret about where he wants to go. He has repeatedly referenced the Washington Commanders, even saying he would sign with them “tomorrow” if the 49ers released him. The connection makes sense of course. It would reunite him with quarterback Jayden Daniels, his former college teammate.

BRANDON AIYUK HAS OFFICIALLY REQUESTED THE #49ERS RELEASE HIM SO HE CAN SIGN WITH THE #COMMANDERS.
“And if I’m crazy or if I’m cappin, tell em boys to cut me today & I’ll sign with the Commanders tomorrow. We’ll see who is cappin”
WOW. pic.twitter.com/7wRJpULcaj
However, there are significant hurdles. Because Aiyuk is still under contract, the Commanders cannot publicly pursue him without violating NFL tampering rules. That means any move would likely require either a trade or a release, both of which depend on the 49ers’ willingness to move on.
Is there any path back to San Francisco?
At this point, it’s hard to see one. Aiyuk’s latest comments were pretty definitive. He didn’t leave the door open for reconciliation, instead making it clear that he views the relationship as over.
The only exception he mentioned was a potential return to Levi’s Stadium on October 19, when the 49ers host Washington, as their opponent.
With training camp approaching, the 49ers will soon be forced to make a decision. Whether that means standing their ground, negotiating a trade, or cutting ties altogether is yet to be seen.
