As Drake Maye defends Mike Vrabel, a different story is unfolding

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye publicly backed head coach Mike Vrabel, but outside the locker room, reaction to the situation is a lot more complicated.

Update:

When Drake Maye finally addressed the situation surrounding New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, the message from inside the Patriots locker room was clear... They’re not wavering.

“We’re here for coach,” Maye said. “We love coach, what he does for us… I know he’s dealing with some stuff off the field… but we’re here for him. And I know he’s gonna come back.”

With his show of support, Maye was delivering a statement that effectively spoke for the entire team as Mike Vrabel continues to navigate a growing off-field controversy after photos and allegations of a relationship between he and The Athletic reporter Dianna Russini emerged.

And in many ways, it confirmed what has been building over the past few days: Vrabel still has the locker room.

Support continues to build around Vrabel

Despite the headlines and speculation, rallying around Vrabel has only become more intense. If the allegations about Russini are true, it would mean that she and Vrabel are both guilty of infidelity. And yet...

Vrabel received a standing ovation from Patriots fans during a recent Q&A session. Team leadership hasn’t publicly wavered. And perhaps most importantly, the franchise quarterback has now stepped forward to reinforce the message.

From a football standpoint, nothing has changed. Vrabel remains in charge. The Patriots are moving forward. And internally, there’s little indication of panic.

Even reports suggesting the team could consider a contingency plan, with names like Mike Tomlin loosely mentioned, seem more like precaution than probability. For now, all signs still point to Vrabel staying put.

A very different outcome elsewhere...

But outside of Foxborough, the situation has unfolded very differently for Dianna Russini. Amid the same controversy, Russini stepped away from her role at The Athletic following an internal investigation, and has faced intense public scrutiny, much of it extending well beyond her professional responsibilities.

The contrast is difficult to ignore. Both figures are tied to the same situation. Yet the consequences, the public reaction, and the level of ongoing support have diverged sharply.

There are, of course, important differences. Russini’s role as a journalist brings with it a separate set of professional expectations, including standards around access, relationships, and reporting integrity. Vrabel, as a head coach, operates in a different space entirely. His evaluation is tied to leadership, performance, and results on the field.

They are important distinctions, yes. But they don’t fully explain the gap in how each has been discussed, scrutinized, and, in some cases, defended.

As the story continues to evolve, the public reaction hasn’t been evenly distributed at all. Vrabel has received vocal support from players, backing from fans, and patience from his organization.

Meanwhile, Russini has faced not only professional consequences, but intense online criticism and ongoing attention to her personal life. The difference not only in tone, but also in outcome, has sparked a conversation that extends far beyond football.

What happens next for the Patriots?

Vrabel has reportedly begun taking steps to address matters off the field, including counseling, while maintaining his role with the team. In fact, he waited until Day 3 of the NFL Draft to do so.

The Patriots, meanwhile, appear committed to keeping football operations steady as the offseason continues. And with Maye emerging as both the face and voice of the franchise, his public backing speaks volumes.
