Bailey Zappe released by the New England Patriots
The Pats announced Tuesday that quarterback Bailey Zappe isn’t part of their plans for the start of the 2024/25 NFL regular season.
After finishing last season as the starting quarterback in Bill Belichick’s final year, Bailey Zappe finds himself out of favor with the New England Patriots, who have released him ahead of the start of the NFL regular season, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Zappe completed the preseason but in the end lost the battle to Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye (a rookie drafted with the second overall pick) and Joe Milton III (drafted in the sixth round of this year’s Draft), leaving him without a place in the roster.
Bailey Zappe’s numbers in New England
Zappe had modest numbers in his two preseason games against the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles. The 26-year-old quarterback threw for just 137 yards, with no touchdown passes.
Drake Maye is shaping up to be the starting quarterback for Jerod Mayo’s team, this after the injury suffered by Jacoby Brissett during the first offensive series of the last preseason game against the Washington Commanders.
Zappe spent two seasons with the New England Patriots. The quarterback played in 14 games, starting only eight. He finished with 2,053 yards passing, one touchdown pass, 12 interceptions and four lost fumbles.
Zappe, a graduate of Western Kentucky University, was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 Draft, thus being the backup to Mac Jones, who was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars this year.
