Bill Belichick questioned on vacant Giants job
The New York Giants are looking for a replacement for former head coach Brian Daboll but the North Carolina head coach has ruled himself out.
Within days of the head coach role opening up with the New York Giants, thoughts have already turned to one of the most storied names in NFL history.
Bill Belichick last coached in the NFL in 2023, when he finally called time on his 24-year stint in charge of the New England Patriots. He recently took charge of the football program at North Carolina but has not had an entirely smooth start to his new career in the NCAA.
On Tuesday Belichick spoke to reporters in Chapel Hill, NC and was asked to comment on speculation linking him to the vacant Giants job.
“Getting ready for Wake Forest, that’s all I got this week,” Belichick replied.
“I’ve been asked about it from time to time,” he continued. “Look I’ve been down this road before. I’m focused on Wake Forest, that’s it. That’s my commitment to this team. This week it’s Wake Forest, next week it’s that opponent and so forth. I’m here to do the best for this team.”
Belichick previously won two Super Bowls with the Giants in the 1986 and 1990 seasons, when he was the team’s defensive coordinator. He was later assistant head coach for the New York Jets but made the controversial decision to join the Patriots within a day of being given the head coach role in New York.
The 73-year-old has maintained that he has every intention of seeing out his lucrative five-year deal with North Carolina. When asked about the prospect of a return to the NFL, Belichick insisted: “I didn’t come here to leave.”
