The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are planning a major renovation of Raymond James Stadium in hopes of hosting another Super Bowl.

In February 2021, Raymond James Stadium last hosted the Super Bowl. It was an unusual year due to COVID-19 restrictions, with only 25,000 tickets sold for the matchup between Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Five years later, Tampa Bay is aiming to host the NFL’s biggest event once again. However, the Buccaneers understand that the stadium will need significant upgrades to make that happen, especially considering the state-of-the-art venues in other states, such as SoFi Stadium in California and Allegiant Stadium in Nevada.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Buccaneers leadership “plans to meet with the Tampa Sports Authority next week” to discuss a “major renovation” of Raymond James Stadium, a project expected to cost close to $1 billion.

For now, discussions have remained internal, but the timing is notable. The Tampa Bay Rays are also planning a new ballpark to replace Tropicana Field and are expected to seek at least half of the $2.3 billion required for that project.

The Buccaneers have 10 months, until January 31, 2027, or earlier, to extend their stadium lease for an additional five years. More than $160 million was already invested in renovations between 2016 and 2018.

Where would the Buccaneers play?

If the renovation plans move forward, the team would need a temporary home during construction.

One option is Camping World Stadium, although it is located in Orlando, about a 90-minute drive from their current stadium. The Buccaneers are also exploring the possibility of developing a mixed-use district around the stadium as part of the broader project.
