Buccaneers 18 vs 24 Bills summary, stats, scores and highlights | NFL Week 8
Somehow, someway, the Bucs made the Bills sweat until the very last play. The Bucs threw up a prayer that wasn't answered by anybody in the end zone. Not one of the Tampa WRs, not one of the Bills secondary guys. Nobody. Mayfield got it to the endzone from the TB 45 and Godwin was the closest around, but he didn't get his head around in time to even see the ball.
The Bucs looked down and out. Buffalo was dominating the field possession game, but Mayfield mounted one last charge on a drive that started with 10:05 to go in the fourth quarter. It took the Bucs 17 plays and almost seven and a half minutes off the clock before Mayfield found Mike Evans at the goal line for the TD.
The Bills were in a rhythm in the first half, and that carried over into the second half when they went 75 yards in just four minutes on the first drive of the third quarter. Allen found Gabe Davis in the back of the end zone and it looked like the Bills were going to run away with the game, but it became a battle of field position for the rest of the way as Buffalo punted on their final four possessions. Three of those four punts pinned the Bucs back inside of their 5 yard line.
On the first TD Allen scrambled into the endzone, on the Bills second TD, he rolled right, drawing the defense towards him which opened up Austin Kincaid for the 22 yard TD, the first of the rookies career.
Two plays after the INT, the Bucs were in the endzone after this three yard pass from Baker Mayfield to Chris Godwin, who has become his favorite WR in his first year in Tampa.
The Bucs finally crossed the 50, and got on the board with a field goal and on the very next play, they picked off Josh Allen to set up a TD to pull even.
People in Buffalo hadn't been too happy watching the Bills offense over the last few weeks, but that changed in the first half. Josh Allen got back to using his feet when he needs to and that only opens the offense up for receivers down the field. This time he took it in himself from 13 yards out.
Buffalo had no problem moving the ball in the first half. They went 77 yards down the field on their first possession, but had their drive halted and had to settle for a field goal. On their next drive, they got down to the one yard line, but were held by the Bucs top rated defense on 4th and 1 and despite having 140 first quarter yards, they only led by 3.
IT'S ALL OVER!!!
The Bills made it look easy for the first 50 minutes, but Mayfield and the Bucs made them sweat it out until the final play.
Hail Mary from the TB 45 after an offside on BUF, and Baker got it there but no one saw it coming! Godwin was the closest to it but he turned his head around too late and the Bills hold on to win!
Short catch for Evans on the right side line for a gain of 8 before going out of bounds.

Mayfield was under pressure and let it go to White with a defender wrapped around his leg and that goes for 5 yards and a first down with 8 seconds to go.

Martin's punt bounces a yard into the end zone and the Bucs will have 22 seconds to get 80 yards.
Murray is stopped just short of the 1st down marker and the Bills will have to punt with around 30 seconds on the clock.
Cook gets the handoff on 2nd and 5 and picks up 3 yards.

Cook gets the handoff and takes it 5 yards to the BUF 48 and that will take us to the Two Minute Warning.
Short pass to Diggs who turns up field and fights through a couple of tackles for a gain of 15 yards and a first down!

Bootleg from Allen and he takes it to the sideline and slides down to keep the clock running after a gain of 1.

Cook gets the handoff up the middle and takes it for 4 yards.

BUF get the ball back at the 24 with 2:41 to go. TB has all of their timeouts left.

A last gasp TD on 4th down will keep TB alive, as Mayfield hits Evans at the goal line for a 24 yard pitch and catch for 6!
The Bucs go for 2 and Mayfield's pass hit off of Phillips and fell into the hands of Otton!!

Evans finally breaks free, and took it for a big gain, but a holding call will bring the Bucs back 10 yards instead of a gain of 41.

After a false start to begin the drive, Mayfield looked for Palmer on the right sideline but the coverage was good and the pass falls incomplete.

BUF kept the offense on the field again, but let the clock run out again, so Martin comes on to punt and he pins the Bucs inside the 10.

That pass over the middle was almost picked by Hoyer who jumped Godwin's route the Bucs will punt again.

Mayfield drops back again, and this time takes it to the right side getting 6 yards on the scramble.

Mayfield was almost dropped in the endzone but he had his knee a few inches off the ground before letting it go.

Allen rushed the snap a bit, and that let Nelson break through the line and sack him for an 11 yard loss on the last play of the third quarter.

Allen looks for Davis on the left side, and that pass was overthrown and he was lucky not to get picked off.

Edmonds gets the handoff again and he slips at the line of scrimmage and gets a half yard.

You wouldn't know it by seeing this play, but Josh Allen hurt his shoulder earlier in the quarter, but was still able to throw it across his body for this Dalton Kincaid TD from 22 yards out. He has been doing what makes him great, which is using his feet to run the ball or move defenses and find open WRs down field.
Two plays after the INT, the Bucs were in the endzone, Godwin has 4 receptions for 48 yards and this fingertip TD to tie the game at 10-10.
Mayfield is 12/20 from 118 yards and a TD.
Not much was happening for the Bucs in the first half, but Gholston came up with the INT off the tipped pass to swing the momentum into the sails of the Buccaneers.
After a couple of rough weeks, Allen started to look like himself, which meant the Bills started to look like their best selves. He used his legs to get into the endzone from 13 yards out and that's what people in Buffalo have been begging to see more of.
He had 179 yards on 15/19 passing with 1 TD and 1 INT, he also has 23 yards rushing, most on this play.
The Bills got down the field in a hurry on their first drive, but were held to a field goal. On their second drive they got all the way down to the 1, but Allen's pass to Kincaid was batted away and the Bucs D came up with a big stop, just as they have been doing all year.

Evans undercover
Mike Evans may not get the accolades or the attention that Justin Jefferson or Jamar Chase or Cooper Kupp get, but he has been one of the most consistent WRs in the league since he was drafted out of Texas A&M in 2014. His 85 career receiving touchdowns have him in the Top 20 on the all time list. He’s got a long way to go before he even gets close to thinking about challenging Jerry Rice’s 197, but he stands just three behind Davante Adams who has the most TDs of any active player with 90, and is 15 away from cracking the Top 10.
Buffalo's D missing pieces
Buffalo has been carried by their offense for the last few years. Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs made them contenders in the AFC for the last half decade, but little by little they have been building a rock solid defense in Buffalo. Unfortunately, that defensive unit has been struck down by injury. Cornerback Tre’Davious White and All-Pro LB Matt Milano will both miss the rest of the season, and to make matter worse, on the offensive end Dawson Knox is going to miss tonight’s game with a wrist injury he suffered against the Pats last week.
Can Baker turn things around?
Baker Mayfield was given the keys to the car in preseason, and he did a great job winning the locker room over in his first few weeks as a Buc. That may still be the case, but it doesn’t matter how good of a teammate you are, if you don’t produce on the field relationships will sour in a split second. Mayfield’s numbers aren’t great, but they aren’t terrible either. He has thrown for 1,363 yards, or 227.2 yards a game and 8 TDs with just 4 INTs. The problems scoring the ball aren’t solely on the shoulders of Mayfield, and when you look back to last year even Tom Brady had trouble putting the Bucs in the end zone, so we have to cut Baker some slack. It will be up to new offensive coordinator Dave Canales to figure out how to make the most out of Mayfield and the offense.
Allen has arrived
The bad results seem to be taking their toll on Josh Allen and the Bills. If you just look at the post game interviews over the last three weeks, Allen looks and sounds defeated. He has struggled with inconsistency over the course of his career, and it always seems to be directly related with the way Buffalo plays as a whole. When he is good the Bills are great. When he is bad, the Bills are terrible. Being a star QB in this league isn’t easy. It’s a lot of responsibility, and Allen accepts that responsibility in the good times and the bad. Tonight he has a chance to get back into the good graces of Bills Mafia after a couple of bumpy weeks.
Buffalo last week
The Bills have seen better days. They came into the season as one of the top teams in the league, and a frontrunner to win the Super Bowl, but were hit with a reality check on the first week of the season after a loss to the Jets. They steadied the ship momentarily, but their last three games have been more than disappointing for those in Bills Mafia. The skid started in London when the Jags downed Josh Allen and the Bills. That was followed by a narrow win over the lowly New York Giants, and last week they were taken down by the previously one-win Patriots. For the second straight week they failed to find the end zone in the first half hour. They went to half down 13-3 but Josh Allen rallied the troops with two passing TDs and a rushing TD that gave Buffalo a 25-22 lead with just under 2:00 to go in the fourth quarter. Mac Jones and the dreadful NE offense managed to move the ball all the way down field and Jones found Gesicki with the game winning TD pass from a yard out.
Bucs last week
It was just about as ugly of game as you could have asked for last week in Tampa Bay. That usually works out for the Bucs who are accustomed to letting their defense do the dirty work while their offense does the bare minimum to scrape by. Last week their offense did the bare minimum again, but this time it wasn’t enough to top the Falcons who turned the ball over in the red zone three times, including two fumbles at a the 1 yard line. Baker Mayfield threw for 275 yards, but the offense only managed one TD in the first quarter. They were held to two field goals the rest of the way, the final one tying the game at 13 with under a minute to go in the fourth quarter. That was enough time for the Falcons to move the ball into field goal range and Younghoe Koo sunk the Bucs with a 51 yard field goal in the final seconds of the game.

They were embarrassed by the Patriots, who dealt them their second loss in their last three games, and now one of the preseason favorites to win the Super Bowl are now spiraling down the AFC ladder. The Bucs are doing the same thing in the NFC, but not too much was expected of this team. That is, until they won three of their first four games, but since then they have been headed downhill in a hurry. Both teams are desperate to put an end to the bad run of form, but only one will stop the bleeding here tonight in Buffalo.
