So Minnesota’s QB room now features three former top-10 picks: Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy and Wentz, who played well last season before a shoulder injury. pic.twitter.com/9Ed7b0QoAM
A crowded QB group in Minnesota
With Wentz back in the mix, the Vikings now have three former top-10 draft picks at quarterback:
- Kyler Murray (No. 1 overall pick, 2019)
- J. J. McCarthy (No. 10 overall pick, 2024)
- Carson Wentz (No. 2 overall pick, 2016)
It’s a rare setup, and now the question is how Minnesota plans to manage the position heading into the 2026 season.
Before suffering a shoulder injury last season, Wentz showed flashes of the form that once made him an MVP candidate earlier in his career. His experience and ability to step in as a starter give Minnesota valuable depth, particularly with a younger quarterback like McCarthy still developing.
At the same time, Wentz’s return suggests the Vikings are prioritizing stability and competition rather than handing the job to a single player outright.
What this means for Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy
Murray, an established starter when healthy, would appear to have the inside track on the job. But his recent injury history makes having reliable backup options critical.
McCarthy, meanwhile, represents the future of the franchise. The former first-round pick is expected to continue developing, but Wentz’s presence could limit how quickly Minnesota accelerates that timeline.
Wentz’s return doesn’t necessarily mean a full-blown quarterback competition, but it does give the Vikings flexibility. They now have a proven veteran in Wentz, a dynamic starter in Murray, and a long-term prospect in McCarthy.
As offseason workouts and training camp approach, Minnesota’s quarterback situation will be one to watch. We will find out whether Wentz is viewed as a true contender for snaps or simply a high-end backup.
