Leo Messi scored his 100th goal in European club competition on Wednesday night as Barcelona beat Olympiacos in the Champions League.

The Argentine fired in a second-half free-kick at the Camp Nou - either side of a Dimitris Nikoloau own goal and an angled strike by Lucas Digne - to help the Catalans to a 3-1 win that maintained their 100% record in the 2017/18 group stage.

The 61st-minute effort means he has now hit 97 in the Champions League and three in the UEFA Super Cup over the course of 122 continental appearances.

Messi on fire in prolific start to 2017/18 campaign

Messi, 30, has made a flying start to the season for club and country, assuming the goalscoring mantle at domestic and international level - most notably in his timely hat-trick for Argentina to secure the Albiceleste's ticket to the 2018 World Cup.

In LaLiga, the forward has notched up 11 goals in eight games and, before facing Olympiacos, had also netted two in the Champions League in the 3-0 defeat of Juventus in Barcelona's opening Group D fixture.

Messi chasing Cristiano's European haul

Messi remains in pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 112 times in Europe. Ronaldo has played 148 times in continental competition, racking up 110 goals in the Champions League and two in the UEFA Super Cup.
