Chargers QB Herbert fractures rib cartilage in loss to Chiefs
Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert suffered a fracture to his rib cartilage during Thursday Night Football; the quarterback will be evaluated daily.
The Los Angeles Chargers left Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night in defeat and with quarterback Justin Herbert in pain.
On Friday the head coach of the Bolts, Brandon Staley, reported that Herbert suffered a fracture in the cartilage of his ribs and will be evaluated day by day to determine if he can play in week 3. Los Angeles’ next game is against the Jacksonville Jaguars at SoFi Stadium.
Chargers coach optimistic
Even though the third-year quarterback has sustained a fracture, the prognosis is brighter than expected.
“We have good news because of what the tomography showed,” explained the coach according to USA Today. “Playing quarterback you don't want to have broken bones. The fact that it is cartilage is a good sign.”
After the match in Kansas City, Herbert underwent an X-ray to assess the damage to his left side. Those tests were negative, according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network.
The 24-year-old hurt his rib during the fourth quarter after a hit courtesy of Mike Danna. After missing a play, the Oregon product returned to the field; after the contact he completed seven passes for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Luck smiles on Mahomes
While Herbert had a rough night (including a pick-six), Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was lucky, and even though the Chargers secondary came close to intercepting him, the passer from KC avoided turnovers. In this regard, the Texas Tech graduate acknowledged good luck.
“I'm living well,” he said, according to NFL.com. “Because there were several interceptions that weren't completed because there were flags, there were penalties, and there was another one that was reversed because he touched soil".
During the game, the Chargers came close to intercepting Mahomes on at least four occasions. Two of those were erased for penalties. Asante Samuel Jr. was unable to control a ball and subsequently threw a pass for a sea of wasted opportunities.
