What a job that Mike Vrable has done with this team in his first year, and how does he get repaid for brining NE to their first playoff win in seven years? He gets a bloody lip after giving Williams a big hug following his sack to end the game. The Patriots will play the winner of tomorrow's Steelers and Texans game from Pittsburgh. 

The Chargers offensive line did okay protecting Justin Herbert for most of the game but he was still getting sacked because the coverage was so good down the field. Later in the game, the D line started to tee off on Herbert who was sacked 6 times and threw for 159 yards on 19/31 passing. Milton Williams dropped the hammer on the Chargers and ended the night with a sack to close out a perfect defensive performance from Foxborough. 

Andy Borrgales was the only one scoring for the Patriots until Maye hit Hunter Henry with a 28 yard TD pass to put the Pats up two scores and that was more than enough for defense to protect the rest of the way. Maye threw for 268 yards and this TD on 17/29 passing. 

The Pats still were struggling to move the ball, but they were driving down the field mid way through the third quarter. That all came to an abrupt end when Odafe Oweh got to Maye and Da'Shawn Hand recovered the fumble. Again the Chargers could't do anything with the take away. 

Drake Maye bounced back from his early mistake and changed the game with his feet. He had 66 yards rushing to lead the Patriots and this long run led to a FG right before the half to put NE up 6-3 heading into the break. 

The Chargers had a great chance to get on the board first, but they went for it on 4th down and Justin Herbert's pass to Keenan Allen was too high and NE's defense came up with their first big play of the night. 

The New England Patriots are moving on to the Division Round of the playoffs after their defensive masterpiece from Gillette Stadium. The defense held the Los Angeles Chargers to just three points all night as Mike Vrable led the Pats to a playoff win for the first time in seven years. 

It wasn't always pretty, but the Pats offense did enough to edge LA on Sunday night. The Chargers came up with the first big defensive play, picking off Drake Maye inside the 10 yard line but LA couldn't turn that take away into points.

This Wild Card Weekend got started in Charlotte when the Rams took down the Panthers with a late fourth quarter drive that made the difference in the first playoff game of this postseason. The Chicago Bears mounted an epic comeback at Soldier Field after going down 21-3 at the halftime break against the Green Bay Packers. Early today the Bills went into Jacksonville and beat the Jaguars by three and the Eagles and Niners are about to finish their heavyweight Wild Card match up from the City of Brotherly Love. 

Wind could shape Sunday night in Foxborough

Weather is expected to be a major factor in the game tonight, with temperatures hovering around freezing and strong winds of 20–23 mph forecasted at Gillette Stadium. The gusts are expected to pick up about an hour before kickoff, potentially complicating both the passing and kicking games throughout the night.

Those conditions may favor New England, which leaned heavily on the run all season. The Patriots ranked sixth in rushing and fourth in rushing touchdowns, led by TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson. The Chargers would like to run as well, but injuries have limited that approach, with Omarion Hampton questionable and Kimani Vidal likely to carry the load. Field position and strategy, including which team chooses to play with the wind, could play a decisive role in a game where conditions may dictate everything.

Patriots eye pressure and discipline against Herbert

Justin Herbert has made a habit of overcoming adversity, and Sunday night presents another test. The Chargers quarterback sat out Week 18 to protect a broken left hand, and while he's expected to be ready, protection remains a major question. Jamaree Salyer, the Chargers’ third left tackle this season, is back after missing two games with a hamstring injury, but New England will still look to stress a line that has allowed Herbert to be sacked three or more times in 10 of his 16 starts.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye put together a historic 2025 season, throwing for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions, while leading the NFL with a 113.5 passer rating. At just 23 years old, he became the youngest quarterback in league history to post a 4,000-yard, 30-TD season with fewer than 10 picks, firmly placing himself in the MVP conversation.

The Chargers defenders have been vocal about what makes Maye so dangerous. His arm talent, poise, and ability to throw on the move stand out, but it's his mobility that may be the biggest concern. Maye led all quarterbacks with 61 scrambles, tied for first in first downs gained on scrambles (26), and finished third in scramble yards (422). While the Chargers believe their experience defending mobile quarterbacks in the AFC West will help, containing Maye outside the pocket will be key to their game plan Sunday night.

A rare coaching showdown 

Today's Wild Card game between the Chargers and Patriots is a rare historical matchup. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and Patriots coach Mike Vrabel will become the first coaches in nearly a decade to face each other in the postseason after having previously played against one another. The last time that happened was Super Bowl 50 in 2016.

Vrabel actually went 3-0 against Harbaugh during their playing days, all coming in the late 1990s when Vrabel was with the Steelers and Harbaugh played for the Colts and Ravens. While those results won't decide today’s outcome, the shared history adds another layer to an already compelling playoff matchup and gives Patriots fans a fun bit of nostalgia heading into kickoff.
