Chicago Bears legend Dick Butkus dies: cause of death
The Hall of Famer, who embodied the Chicago Bears’ hard-hitting style of play, has passed away aged 80.
The Chicago Bears announced through a press release that the legendary Dick Butkus, considered one of the best linebackers in NFL history, died at the age of 80 while sleeping at his home. in Malibu, California. No further information was provided at this time.
George H. McCaskey, President of the Bears, offered his condolences to the family and stated that Butkus epitomized what it meant to be a player for the Chicago franchise while also honoring the city.
“Dick was the ultimate Bear and one of the finest players in NFL history,” said McCaskey. “He was a true son of Chicago. He embodied what our great city stands for, and not by coincidence, what George Halas sought in a player: toughness, intelligence, instincts, passion, and leadership.”
Butkus was born in Chicago and spent his entire athletic career in Illinois. During high school, he played for Chicago Vocational and went on to be a part of the Fighting Illini at the collegiate level.
During his tenure with the Bears, the linebacker earned the nickname ‘The Maestro of Mayhem’ due to his exceptional ability to disrupt opposing offenses. Butkus was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and a five-time member of the NFL’s first-team All-Pro.

After his nine years with the Bears, Butkus was enshrined in Canton as part of the Class of 1979. Alongside him, inducted were quarterback Johnny Unitas, defensive back Yale Lary, and offensive lineman Ron Mix.
