Coach McCarthy optimistic after Dak Prescott surgery

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott sustained a thumb injury in their Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and was initially thought to be out for at least nine weeks following the necessary surgery to repair the finger. The good news is that head coach Mike McCarthy expects the quarterback to heal quickly.

In a press conference, McCarthy revealed that everyone within the Dallas organization is optimistic after the quarterback’s surgery and he hopes that the next ten days will help Prescott heal.

“We all feel good about Dak’s surgery from a medical perspective. From my perspective, he just had surgery, the next 7-10 days he will be in a healing stage. We must overcome that challenge first. I know that after the operation, the surgeon showed optimism”, declared the head coach.

Prescott completed 14 of 29 throws for 134 yards and an interception before leaving AT&T Stadium in their season opener. In addition, the QB was sacked twice and had 11 yards on two carries.

Players out vs. Bengals

In addition to Prescott, McCarthy ruled out guard Connor McGovern, safety Jayron Kearse and defensive end Tarell Basham for the Week 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

McGovern suffered a sprained ankle and it looks like Matt Farniok will take his place on the offensive line. On the practice squad are Alec Lindstrom, Dakoda Shepley, Aviante Collins and Isaac Alarcon to provide depth on game day.

For his part, Kearse suffers from a knee sprain. Among the players who could fill his place on the secondary defense are Israel Mukuamu and Markquese Bell.

Finally, Dante Fowler and Sam Williams could take the place of Basham, who has been ruled out with a thigh injury.
