Commanders go long with legendary retention
After falling just short of Super Bowl LIX, Washington aims to reload and contend in the NFC with key veterans and fresh talent.
The Washington Commanders came within touching distance of Super Bowl LIX, and they believe that by holding on to their key players — along with adding external reinforcements — they can remain competitive in the NFC for the 2025 NFL season.
That’s why the team from the US capital opted to retain the legendary Bobby Wagner. The linebacker, who represented himself during negotiations, agreed to return to Washington next season on a deal worth up to $10.3 million, with $8.7 million fully guaranteed, according to NFL Network.
At 34, Wagner is heading into his 14th NFL season and his second with Washington. Last year, he served as the veteran leader of the Commanders’ defense, racking up 132 tackles, four passes defended, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
Commanders' 2025 free agents
The Commanders will enter free agency with 27 unrestricted free agents, all of whom will be free to sign with any team once the new league year begins next week. The upside for Washington is its healthy cap space — they have the fourth-most salary cap room in the league, with $85.1 million available, according to Spotrac.
Among the most valuable pending free agents are veteran defensive players, including safety Jeremy Chinn, defensive ends Clelin Ferrell and Dante Fowler Jr., and cornerback Michael Davis.
On the offensive side, Washington is expected to make a push to retain Marcus Mariota as the backup quarterback behind Jayden Daniels, while also evaluating which wide receivers to keep from a group that includes Olamide Zaccheaus, Dyami Brown, Noah Brown and Jamison Crowder.
