COWBOYS

Could Bill Belichick really go to the Cowboys?

After the Cowboys ended their season with another playoff letdown, could Bill Belichick really replace Mike McCarthy as Dallas’ next head coach? I hope not.

Jerry Jones is a difficult man to understand sometimes. He fired Tom Landry, the man who coached the Cowboys for 29 seasons and took them to 20 straight winning seasons,in the worst way. Of course, it was the right thing to do, but in the wrong way. But he’ll forever be vilified for it.

Then there was Jason Garrett, whom he kept on for, I don’t know, forever? Garrett coached the Cowboys for nine years and he should have been fired years before that. In those nine years, he took the Cowboys to one postseason.

And here we have now the situation with Mike McCarthy. When Garrett was finally fired, Cowboys fans sang. Finally. Maybe now we’ll actually have a real chance at a deep postseason run. And yet the furthest we’ve gone under McCarthy is the Divisional Round, last year. This season brought another devastating Wild Card exit.

So what will Jerry Jones do? Will he fire McCarthy? And if so, will he hire...Bill Belichick? Personally, I hope not.

Will the Cowboys hire Bill Belichick after playoffs disaster?

Although the Landry saga was somewhat forgiven when Jimmy Johnson took the Cowboys to two Super Bowl victories, Jones is still seen as somewhat of a villain. And if he’s a villain, think about what Bill Belichick is. Belichick is Darth Vader, and I don’t mean in the way Brandon Bolden once meant it. This is the man who delivered his resignation letter to the Jets on a napkin instead of taking over for Bill Parcells. Then, of course, there was the 2005 scandal of stealing playbooks from the Eagles and the 2007 scandal of “Spygate”, mysterious malfunctioning headsets at Gillette Stadium, and “Deflategate” in 2014, which he blamed on his beloved Tom Brady. Who wants a man like that joining a man like Jerry to head their team? Well, a lot of people actually. But not I. (Sadly, my opinion means nothing here - I asked Jones to fire Garrett for YEARS, to no avail).

But what’s the reality of it actually happening? Honestly, I think it’s unlikely. Just because Belichick is available this time around doesn’t make him a great option and just because the Cowboys choked away another playoff win doesn’t make McCarthy to blame.

On the surface, Belichick may seem like a great option. As a head coach, he’s reached nine Super Bowls and won six, won the AFC 17 times and had 19 consecutive winning seasons. And yet, he’s a stubborn, 72-year-old man who would have to be okay leaving Jones with power over the team rather than himself, and he may not be up for the task. Then again, perhaps he would be driven by the chance to break Don Shulla’s all-time record for coaching wins, which he is currently 14 wins away from. What motivates Darth Vader? And even on that note, he could still accomplish that with the Chargers, the Seahawks, or any other team who may lose its coach after the postseason.

Then you have what McCarthy has done for the Cowboys, despite the lack of postseason success. He’s led them to three consecutive 12-win seasons, two division titles, this year’s no. 2 seed in the NFC, and one playoff win. It’s not to say that McCarthy will definitely be the answer to the Cowboys’ misery just given time, but is it worth the risk of getting rid of him already, after he’s established something good on this Cowboys team?

Anything is possible. Jones has publicly stated his respect for Belichick. And despite the 12-win seasons, Jones is still 28 years removed from his most recent Super Bowl appearance with the Cowboys. 28 years removed from their last NFC Championship game. The heartwrenching loss in Dallas tonight could be just enough to push Jones to desperation and bring Belichick to America’s Team. But Belichick would have to agree to it, too.
