SUPER BOWL LVIII

Could Patrick Mahomes match Tom Brady’s record of Super Bowl wins?

The Kansas City QB has guided his team to the Super Bowl for the fourth time in five seasons and could soon rank among the all-time greats.

The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up for yet another Super Bowl appearance this weekend, a game that could secure their status as one of the league’s great dynasties,

Super Bowl LVIII will be the Chiefs’ fourth in five years and they could become the first team to go back-to-back since the iconic New England Patriots side managed it in 2004. That Patriots team were led by Tom Brady, who won six of his seven NFL rings during a 19-year stay in New England.

Brady is out on his own in terms of Super Bowls won, but Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes could start to close the gap with another triumph on Sunday. Mahomes has already won two Super Bowls (LIV, LVII) with the Chiefs and can make it three against the San Francisco 49ers.

Behind Brady’s astonishing seven Super Bowl triumphs, former San Francisco and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Charles Haley is the closest with five rings. There are 34 players who have won four Super Bowls, many of whom were involved in dynastic triumphs of the Pittsburgh Steelers (1970s) and the San Fancisco 49ers (1980s).

How many Super Bowls can Patrick Mahomes win?

Even a victory in Super Bowl LVIII would leave Mahomes four short of Brady’s total, but that does not mean that the record is insurmountable. Brady won his third Super Bowl in 2005 at the age of 28, the same age as Mahomes is currently.

If the Kansas City quarterback is victorious on Sunday he will, in one sense, be ‘on track’ to equal Brady’s record.

More on Super Bowl LVIII...

However, Brady’s incredible haul and GOAT status is built upon on his longevity. He featured in NFL for 23 seasons and played in, and won, his seventh Super Bowl at the age of 43. No one has ever come close to a period of dominance like that.

His final triumph, Super Bowl LV, was the fifth time that Brady had been named the game’s Most Valuable Player, showing the enduring brilliance of the Super Bowl’s oldest-ever player.

Ahead of the Chiefs - 49ers clash, there has been a lot of talk about Mahomes’ place in the pantheon of great quarterbacks. Tom Brady was asked for his take on the conversation and the seven-time winner refused to compare himself to the Chiefs star.

“There’s nothing that Patrick can do, in my opinion, that can take away from what I did in my career. And there’s nothing that I did that will take away from what he’s trying to accomplish,” Brady said. “If anyone can go out there and win seven Super Bowls I have so much respect for them, I know how difficult it is, I will congratulate them.”
