Cowboys block Mike McCarthy from interviewing with Chicago Bears
The Bears requested to interview McCarthy for the coaching vacancy left by Matt Eberflus, but the approach was blocked by the Cowboys.
The Chicago Bears are one of six NFL franchises that have a head coaching vacancy open for the 2025 season.
Unfortunately, one of their options has been blocked, even before having the chance to schedule an interview with the candidate.
The NFC North’s bottom team in the 2024 season made a formal request to the Dallas Cowboys to interview Mike McCarthy with a view to filling the position vacated by Matt Eberflus since his Week 13 departure. However, according to the ESPN report, America’s Team rejected the Bears' request.
McCarthy’s situation is unlike any other head coach in the NFL because, according to multiple reports, his current contract with the Cowboys is set to expire on on 14 January.
The Super Bowl XLIV-winning coach with the Green Bay Packers finished his five-year contract with the Cowboys with a 49-35 regular-season record and a 1-3 playoff record. In 18 years of experience as a head coach, he had a combined record of 185-123-2 between the regular season and the postseason.
Candidates for Bears coaching vacancy
The Bears finished the season with Thomas Brown as interim head coach, but have decided to look for a new head coach. So far, the management have shown interest in the following offensive coordinators: Ben Johnson (Lions), Arthur Smith (Steelers), Mike Kafka (Giants), Todd Monken (Ravens) and Joe Brady (Bills).
On the defensive side, the most attractive candidates for the Chicago franchise are: Aaron Glenn (Lions), Brian Flores (Vikings) and Anthony Weaver (Dolphins). Two other interesting profiles have been linked with the franchise in Mike Vrabel, former consultant for the Cleveland Browns, and David Shaw, personnel executive for the Denver Broncos.
