Cowboys defense gives Super Bowl hope

The Dallas Cowboys were dealt a Week 1 blow when Dak Prescott went down with a finger injury, but the defense is keeping them alive in his absence.

The Dallas Cowboys rank second in the NFC East with a record of 2-1, right behind the Philadelphia Eagles despite losing Dak Prescott midway through the first game of the 2022 NFL campaign.

Record setting defense for Dallas?

Jerry Jones’ team will face the Washington Commanders this weekend and will depend on their defense more than the performance of backup QB Cooper Rush.

If they can keep Carson Wentz and the Commanders to less than 200 net passing yards, it would be the best first four start to a season that Dallas has had since 1977.

That season, the Cowboys won their second NFL championship by beating the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII with defensive backs Harvey Martin, Randy White, Cliff Harris, Mel Renfro and Charlie Waters patrolling the secondary.

At the moment, the Cowboys are the fourth-best defense in terms of passing yards allowed per game, giving up just 176.3 through three games. That’s their lowest since 1972.

Cowboys getting to QBs with ease

This year the defense has had great success when they decide to rush the quarterback. At the moment, Dallas has 13 sacks after three games, they have one ad three seasons in which they had more through three games. In 1987 they sacked the quarterback 16 in three games, in 1994, 15 and in 1975, 14.

The Cowboys have yet to allow any of their rivals to reach the 20-point mark (Bucs 19, Bengals 17 and Giants 16). The last time they did this was in the 1973 season when they limited the Bears, Saints and Cardinals to 17, 3 and 10 points respectively.
