Cowboys sticking with Cooper Rush at quarterback, says Jerry Jones

After Cooper Rush’s second game filling in for Dak Prescott, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says they are sticking with Rush over Trey Lance as the starter.

With Dak Prescott out for the season, quarterback Cooper Rush has become the starter for the Dallas Cowboys. Despite two back-to-back losses, Rush showed a lot of improvement from last week to this one.

As the Cowboys' season is already in the dumps, some fans thought this would be a good time to give the QB3 Trey Lance a shot at playing, to see what he can do and get him some real experience. But after their loss to the Texans, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Rush will remain the starter in place of Prescott this season.

Rush to remain Cowboys starting QB

In his first start for the Cowboys this season during their game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Rush finished 13-of-23 for just 45 yards and fumbled twice. In their loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday, Rush finished with a career high in pass attempts (55) and passing yards (354), including a 64-yard touchdown by KaVontae Turpin, and one interception - a marked improvement.

After the game, Jerry Jones confirmed that Rush, not Trey Lance, will be the Cowboys' starter moving forward.

“We know that we’ve got limited time to work with these quarterbacks at this particular time, and I would look for us to stay with the experience,” Jones said in his weekly interview with 105.3 The Fan.

“I thought [Cooper] Rush played better than he accounted for the previous game,” Jones said. “But still it was far off the mark for what it took to beat a team that normally we should’ve been able to step up and have a better accounting for.”

Rush spoke about the Cowboys' failures in the red zone as well and took some of the credit for those mistakes.

“We just got to get the ball in the end zone,” Rush said. “Keep shooting ourselves in the foot, had a couple of chances there in the second half that we just didn’t punch it in, it starts with me… opportunities like that versus a good football team, you can’t blow it like that.”

McCarthy regrets not starting Trey Lance

While Jones seems set on Rush as the starter going forward, head coach Mike McCarthy regrets not giving Trey Lance a shot at some of the drives later in the game, and he will likely get some shots in here and there in the upcoming games.

We have thought it was just too important for us to have [Trey Lance] at quarterback in these last two ballgames because we need to win to that degree and give ourselves every chance we can,” Jones said. “We hadn’t gotten to the point that we were looking to evaluate Trey Lance more, at all.”

As the Cowboys look ahead to their next game against NFC East rival Washington Commanders on Sunday, Rush will again make the start for Dallas.

“It sucks, you’re happy to have another chance to get out there,” Rush said. “But you definitely want to get rid of this bad taste in our mouth and move on.”
