Update:

On Wednesday, a Cleveland-based sports broadcaster, Bruce Drennan, started a rumor that the Cleveland Browns were negotiating a trade for Dallas Cowboys veteran quarterback Dak Prescott. He said he had a “pretty darn good source within the Browns’ organization - a couple”.

Debunking the Dak drama

“I heard, since our last show, that part of the reason why Myles Garrett was so willing to sign this extension - yeah, money, money, money - the Browns are negotiating as we speak with the Dallas Cowboys for a trade for Dak Prescott,” said Drennan.

Drennan also mentioned that Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II as well as some draft picks would be a part of the deal.

The Cowboys extended Prescott ahead of last season in a four-year, $240 million deal that made him the highest-paid player in NFL history. He was injured in Week 9 of the season. They’ve since let their two backups go in free agency and are looking to the draft to give Prescott a solid backup.

Yahoo Sports’ Jane Slater noted that Dallas’ new head coach Brian Schottenheimer has a good relationship with Prescott and to trade him away wouldn’t make sense. (Though we’ve seen recently in Dallas sports...senseless trades are not unheard of, and as Slater also mentions, “you never know”.)

“Not to mention, he has a no-trade clause,” Slater went on. “Even if Dak did agree that he wanted to be traded, the dead money that Dallas would carry, not to mention what Cleveland would then be hemorrhaging in cash they spent on quarterbacks in recent years, it literally is so absurd.”

Prescott’s cap hit for the 2025 season is $52.9 million, according to Sportrac. By 2026, it will be $76.5 million, and by 2027, around $70 million. The Browns, meanwhile, have just over $18 million in cap space left for 2025, according to Over the Cap. The math does not add up.

The Browns appear to be going with Deshaun Watson as their 2025 starter again and have the No. 2 overall pick in the draft next month. If the Tennessee Titans go with Travis Hunter first overall, it would leave quarterback Cam Ward on the board. If Ward’s gone to the Titans, the Browns could select Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders if a quarterback is really on their radar.
