Update:

The Dallas Cowboys and contract drama go together like peanutbutter and jelly. They’ve got a new head coach trying to change the culture, and yet, they’re having the same old problems.

Last season, it was wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and this year, it’s edge rusher Micah Parsons. But quarterback Dak Prescott was also wrapped up in a bit of contract drama last season. The difference between Prescott and Lamb was that Prescott demonstrated patience. He didn’t hold out, he showed up to practice, and he had a “whatever happens, happens” attitude. Meanwhile, Lamb missed all of training camp waiting on a deal. Both deals were inevitably done after training camp and before the season started.

This year, Parsons is owed an extension and once again, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is taking his time getting it done. Parsons was taking it in stride at first, showing up to OTAs and waiting it out, but his patience ran out after Jones made some inconsiderate comments about him. And amid the stalemate, Parsons requested a trade.

Dak Prescott keeps it blunt

Dak, having been through this before and come out the other side as the highest-paid player in NFL history had few words to say about it all. Few...but impactful words.

Prescott finally broke his silence on the tension between the team and Parsons. He didn’t take sides, but summed up the situation with one telling phrase: “This business is business-first.”

“We always say this game is a business, but it’s business first,” said Prescott.

The comment reflects his understanding of the often cold, transactional nature of NFL contract negotiations, having personally experienced it before landing his own massive extension. With Jones remaining nonchalant and tensions still high, the situation with Parsons remains unresolved. But Prescott’s response highlights the professional detachment required to survive in the NFL today.

By the time the season starts, Jones will have very likely given Parsons his extension with the amount he’s asking for. Why he’s waiting, we can only guess (but I think it rhymes with she-go), but before the 2025-26 season, I expect to see Parsons with a star on his helmet and a big bag of cash.
