Dallas Cowboys 2022 preseason round-up: CeeDee Lamb, Dalton Schultz, UCFL MVP tryouts…

Will Dalton Schultz keep the franchise tag or get the contract extension worth more? The Cowboys have to come to an agreement by Friday at 3 p.m.

No. 1 Wide Receiver: CeeDee Lamb

The 2022 Dallas Cowboys Star Magazine Training Camp Preview is out, and on the cover is wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Lamb has been set to be the no. 1 receiver for a while, but the process sped up a bit when the Cowboys let Amari Cooper go this offseason and Michael Gallup recovers from an ACL injury. Lamb led the team in catches and receiving yards last season, but being the top receiver is a whole different ball game. We will see if he has what it takes.

USFL MVP KaVontae Turpin tries out with Cowboys

Speaking of wide receivers, the Cowboys had a former TCU standout receiver at the Star last week for a tryout. USFL MVP KaVontae Turpin finished last season leading the league in receiving yards and yards after catch, plus 129 rushing yards and six touchdowns. The New Jersey Generals finished first in the league at 9-1. Turpin isn’t a big guy (5′9″, 155 pounds), but he is shifty. Could we see him with a Cowboys jersey on in the near future? It happened for former USFL MVP Herschel Walker back in 1985!

Sean Payton IS interested in Cowboys in 2023

The saga continues. When Sean Payton left the New Orleans Saints in January, the rumors for his future began. He won’t coach in the 2022 season, but the 2023 season is anyone’s game. Payton worked for the Cowboys as an assistant coach back in 2003, and they haven’t had an opportunity to work together since he joined the Saints in 2005. Two decades after their first stint, and it just might happen. When Payton was asked which teams he would work with, given the chance, no one was surprised when he mentioned the Dallas Cowboys. Payton made sure to emphasize that he would never lobby for a filled coaching job. News flash - that’s all of them. With current Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy under pressure this season, it wouldn’t be that shocking if he’s the coach to go at the end of the season, depending on what he can prove this fall.

Dalton Schultz: NFL Franchise Tag Deadline tomorrow!

The NFL Franchise Tag Deadline is fast-approaching. Teams and players must make their decisions by Friday at 4 p.m., meaning the Cowboys and tight end Dalton Schultz need to come to an agreement. If they can’t decide on the contract extension, then it means they’re sticking with the one-year deal for $10.93 million. If Schultz does expect an offer, projections estimate it would be to the tune of four years, $58 million ($14.5 million per year). That would make him just the second-highest paid NFL tight end next to San Francisco 49ers’ George Kittle (making $15 million per year on average). Schultz produced 78 catches, 808 yards, and six touchdowns last season. If that trend continues, he’ll just get more expensive in the future.
