Dallas Cowboys 2022 preseason round-up: Malik Jefferson, Dalton Schultz, Deebo Samuels…

The Cowboys signed linebacker Malik Jefferson to their roster. With hours left to decide, it seems unlikely Dalton Schultz will get a contract extension.

Update:

Cowboys sign linebacker Malik Jefferson

Linebacker Malik Jefferson is from the Dallas area, but was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2018 NFL Draft. After 10 games with the Bengals, he was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury. He then bounced around quite a few teams, between active roster and practice squad. It was with the Los Angeles Chargers where he played the most games (13) in 2020, to then play just one game with the Colts last season. Now, he’s signed with the Dallas Cowboys. Jefferson will hope to finally make it onto an active roster and stay there. To make room for Jefferson, the Cowboys released running back JaQuan Hardy.

Former Cowboys scout brings up possibility of Deebo Samuel trade

49ers receiver Deebo Samuel’s future is still more or less up in the air. The 49ers could extend his contract, or they could force him to finish out the final season of his rookie contract. It’s also possible someone could trade for him. That was the talk of the offseason back a few months ago, but it’s been mostly accepted that Samuel will likely stay in San Francisco. But then former Cowboys scout Bryan Broaddus brought it up again in his podcast Love of the Star, and shed some light on the likelihood of Dallas trading for Samuel. According to Broaddus, it’s a very Jerry-Jones-ey move, and it is. The Cowboys like their receivers, and Jones likes to make bold moves. The question is, where would that leave CeeDee Lamb? He was set to be the number one receiver with Amari Cooper cut. If Samuel is there, how would the two receivers be utilized? Not to mention, what would he cost them?

Franchise Tag Deadline: Dalton Schultz unlikely to sign extension

Today is the last day to make a deal. The Franchise Tag deadline is at 4 p.m. ET. For the Cowboys and tight end Dalton Schultz, that means a decision needs to be made ASAP. The Cowboys offered Schultz a one-year, $10.93 million franchise tag, and talks haven’t progressed in nearly three weeks. Schultz signed the one-year tender in March, but skipped some voluntary OTAs, unhappy about the contract situation. He later reported to the mandatory minicamp in June. Though Schultz had a great season last year (78 receptions for 808 yards), it’s unlikely the Cowboys will sign him to a long-term contract just yet, as they are more likely to sign long-term deals for CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, and Trevon Diggs.
