The Dallas Cowboys are the most popular team in the NFL. As we gear up for football season, let’s take a look at some interesting facts about the team.

The Dallas Cowboys have been around since 1960 when they got their start as the NFL’s first expansion team. Since then, they’ve become one of the most well-known sports franchises in the world. From the logo to the cheerleaders to the dynasty they built in the ‘90s, the Cowboys have become an icon.

As the 2024 season approaches, let’s take a look at some interesting facts about the Dallas Cowboys.

Fun facts about the Dallas Cowboys

Biggest fanbase

Of all 32 NFL teams, the Dallas Cowboys have the largest global fanbase with 8.5 million supporters as of 2023. Their consistent popularity is part of the reason the nickname “America’s Team” has stuck for 46 years, despite not having won a Super Bowl in the last 28. The Cowboys were by far the most Googled NFL team according to research conducted between 2017 and 2022.

Most valuable franchise

The Cowboys are not just the most valuable NFL franchise, but also the most valuable franchise in all of sports. Worth $9 billion, the Cowboys have become more than just a sports team - they are a brand. They have remained the most valuable sports franchise since 2015, and will likely hold it for years to come.

They almost never wear blue uniforms

Even though the Cowboys’ colors are navy blue, silver, and white, the team almost never wears their blue uniforms. Unlike other NFL teams, the Cowboys wear their white jerseys at home and have been doing so since they started out in 1960. This was because then general manager Tex Schramm wanted the Cowboys fans to be able to see all the colors of the other NFL teams that came to play in their stadium. Since the other NFL teams typically do wear their colored jerseys at home, the Cowboys usually end up wearing white both at home and on the road. It’s even become somewhat of a superstition that the blue jerseys actually bring bad luck now.

Only team with 20 straight winning seasons

The Dallas Cowboys are the only team in NFL history to record 20 straight winning seasons, which they did from 1966 until 1985. During that time, they only missed the playoffs twice, in 1974 and 1984.

Record sellout seasons

The Cowboys have been selling out their games since 2002, both home and on the road, and both in the regular season and postseason. Since then, they’ve sold out a record 190 consecutive games, a testament to their loyal fanbase.

Fewest points allowed in a Super Bowl - tied

The Cowboys are tied with the New England Patriots for fewest points allowed in a Super Bowl game. The Cowboys were the first to do so, when they played the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI in 1972, holding the Dolphins to just three points the entire game and winning 24-3.

Only Super Bowl MVP on a losing team

The Dallas Cowboys are the only team to ever have a Super Bowl MVP as part of the losing team. When the Cowboys played the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl V in 1971, they lost 16-13. Still, Cowboys Hall of Fame linebacker Chuck Howley was the one to win the Super Bowl MVP. In a game dubbed the “Blunder Bowl” that saw both teams combine for 11 turnovers. Howley accounted for two interceptions and as both teams played so poorly, he was able to win MVP despite being on the losing side, the only time such a thing has happened in NFL history.
