Though they came up short of expectations last season, it’s clear that the Dolphins possess one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. With the star signal caller now tied up for the long term, the franchise has taken an important step toward maintaining that firepower.

Tua Tagovailoa’s contract extension is hefty

The Miami Dolphins made a move this week and it appears to have been a good one. According to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garofolo of NFL Network, the Dolphins and starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa have agreed to a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension that includes $167.1 million guaranteed. As you may know, Tagovailoa had declined to attend the first days of the Dolphins’ training camp, seemingly awaiting the finalization of a new contract. Now, it appears the 26-year-old has got what he was looking for, a payday that will put him among the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks.

To be clear, Tagovailoa is now set to earn $53.1 million, making him the third-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. Only the Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow pocket more than that with both being paid $55 million. It is of course worth noting what the former Alabama star has achieved since entering the league in 2020 as the No. 5 overall pick. While his first two seasons weren’t exactly stellar, Tagovailoa has grown by leaps and bounds since then.

Indeed, in his last two seasons, the first two with the offensively minded head coach Mike McDaniel, he has exploded. Across 17 games last season, Tagovailoa completed 69.3% of his passes for 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. Though it’s true that the number of interceptions was the most of his career so far, Tagovailoa eclipsed his previous career-high in passing yards which was 3,548 yards in 13 games in 2022. Needless to say, the Dolphins will be looking for more of the same as they look to make good on the long-held belief that they can win a Super Bowl.
