The Bills announced on Thursday morning that Damar Hamlin’s health was improving.

Damar has shown remarkable improvement over the past 24 hours,” the team wrote in a Twitter statement, attributing the update to doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. “While still critically ill, he has demonstrated that he appears to be neurologically intact. His lungs continue to heal and he is making steady progress.”

Sometime later, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport even noted that the 24-year-old safety “opened his eyes and is responsive.”

According to reports, Hamlin asked the medical team who won the match between the Bills and Bengals after he woke up writing the question down.

“We are in the situation that we have allowed him to gradually wake up as the body was healing. Last night he was able to emerge, follow commands, and asked who won the game,” said University of Cincinnati Health physicians Dr. Timothy Pritts and Dr. William Knight.

Countless figures, players, and individuals have shown great support for Hamlin and his family, whether through prayers, reaching out to his family, suspending NFL games, or even creating a GoFundMe account that raised $6 million.

What caused Hamlin’s cardiac arrest?

It is unknown why Hamlin’s heart stopped, but according to cardiac experts, the blow to his chest may have sent his heart into an arrhythmia. Hamlin’s injury is unusual: the chest must be struck about 20 milliseconds, while the heart is relaxing.
