The President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, stated that he had spoken at length with the parents of Damar Hamlin, the Buffalo Bills safety who remains hospitalized in critical condition after suffering a cardiac arrest during Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The exact details of the conversation were not disclosed by the president.

Jennifer Jacobs of Bloomberg News reported that the POTUS spoke with the family of the Bills’ defensive back while traveling between Ohio and Kentucky, where Biden announced he will invest $1 billion in the repair of the Brent Spence Bridge as part of the bipartisan Repair Our Infrastructure bill.

The latest update on Hamlin’s health from the Bills is that the 24-year-old is still in critical condition, but showing some improvement.

Dangerous game

During the interaction with reporters prior to boarding Air Force One, Biden explained that he understands that the essence of the game means that football is an inherently dangerous sport.

“You have players who are 6′8”, weigh 340 pounds and run a 40-yard dash in 4.8 seconds. If you hit someone in those conditions - I know that did not happen - I think there is no way to avoid it,” Biden said. “I think there is no way around it. They work on helmets, on concussion protocols, that makes sense, but it’s a dangerous thing.”
